Engine ID isn't clear cut
I just purchased a '68 K10 Chevy and the SPID doesn't mention having a V8, but the truck does. Everything looks factory but someone might have put a V8 in it a long time ago.
The engine has an oil fill tube and the head numbers are 3911032 which come back as 307/327. It is a 2bbl engine so all things would point to a 307 but the machined pad on the passenger side doesn't have the typical ID marks (see pics). The block is covered in grime and I can't get to the back of the block to look at the casting numbers. Any help? |

Re: Engine ID isn't clear cut
What are the 3 letters on the pad in front of the ps head. Might have to move the fuel line out of the way to see them

Re: Engine ID isn't clear cut
The second picture is of the pad in front of the PS cylinder head. No letters just the numbers 43358.

Re: Engine ID isn't clear cut
There is nothing besides those numbers, I scrubbed the pad thinking it might have some light stamping marks, but nothing

Re: Engine ID isn't clear cut
Factory installed the 307 as standard on V8 trucks. Any other engine (327 or 396) would be listed on the spid.

Re: Engine ID isn't clear cut
Look at your VIN# and your spid MOD#
On the VIN# the 3rd letter in E=8cyl, S=6cyl. On your MOD# it's the 2nd letter in. This will at least tell you if it came originaly with a 6 or and 8cyl. I believe this is correct, if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me... "LOL" Gary

Re: Engine ID isn't clear cut
Thanks for the info, it has an E so I guess it is a 307 truck.
