Fuel filler neck grommet

Holly cow! – that grommet for the cab and fuel filler neck is a pain to install. I got it done but there has to be a secret to an easier installation. I used a soapy water solution and some dental pick style tools to pull the grommet in from the back side. It turned out good but man it was more difficult than I expected. Anyone care to share their installation secrets?

Re: Fuel filler neck grommet

I put mine in from the outside, soaped it up, and taped up a flat blade screwdriver. After I got it started I took a prybar wrapped in a towel and a baggie, slipped it down the neck and slowly, carefully wiggled the neck around as I pushed on the grommet with the screwdriver. Worked like a charm and only took a couple of minutes.

Re: Fuel filler neck grommet

I've replaced mine at least 3-4 times in my two trucks. First couple of times it was a pain but basically did it like everyone by lubing it with silicone oil and pushing it in from the outside.

I also did it a couple of times from the inside while I had the tank out for cleaning. It seemed easier that way. First time I pushed it outward from the inside and the second time I installed it in the opening and lubed the neck of the tank and pushed it through.

Bottom line, take your time, use plenty of lube and don't use sharp objects.

Re: Fuel filler neck grommet

I'm not trying to be dirty and this is the only picture I could find, but I just recently put the fuel tank back into my truck and I used this stuff. I put the fuel tank in first, then put the grommet in. The filler neck was slightly off center, and I had a hard time with the tighter side, but all in all it only took about 5 minutes. It's been raining good lately, and it doesn't seem to leak.

Re: Fuel filler neck grommet

I remove the tank, install the grommet, lube the gas filler neck and then push the tank back through the installed grommet. I have also heard of some guys roping it in like a windshield. WES

Re: Fuel filler neck grommet

I have only done one. I put I put the collar in a pot with water and boiled it. I slipped it right on the neck with gloves on, And it didn't take to much effort as I recall. (that was twenty years ago!) And it was an oem collar. cheers, Pat

I recently did mine using the dish soap and force it with a screwdriver described by many folks above.

If I ever have to do it again I'll definitely try this!

I use similar stuff! It is way more slippery than soap and it rinses right off. Just stay away from the flavored stuff, you don't want people licking your filler neck! (well maybe some of you do but I don't judge!)

Mine was also and I used a long 2" dowel to straighten it. I shoved it and gently pushed on it to center the neck.

Re: Fuel filler neck grommet

I've had good luck with soaking it in warm soapy water when putting it on from the outside.

Re: Fuel filler neck grommet

I have changed mine several times because they keep cracking after a month or two, I don't mean to hijack but has anyone found a supplier that sells a good grommet for a 72GMC? I have bought them from Classic Parts, LMC and one more that escapes me right now. Each of them sent me a free replacement but they all cracked as well. It's getting kind of old replacing them all the time. The last one I installed leaves a black streak down the cab corner every time it rains or snows.

Try Classic Heartbeat. Mine has gone through a dry, hot Texas summer and still no cracks and black smudges.

Now there's an English saying...how'd that get over there.
I've often wanted to use it, but assumed nobody would get it, or would think I had an unhealthy interest K9 Testicles

I have used Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly, and with very little effort they slip right on.

Re: Fuel filler neck grommet

3m silicone paste on the grommet and push and twist 180 no problem. The silicone is also used to protect rubber and my grommet looks new after 7 years.

Re: Fuel filler neck grommet

Great feedback!

I never knew the slippery stuff or ky jelly had other uses – LMAO. I think I might have a difficult time explaining that one to my wife.

I will definitely keep these in mind when I do my next one. My 72 4x4 will need to be replaced (as well as many other items) when I start her restoration.

Thanks!
