LWB Take-Off bed looks brand new WOW

Well I finally got over to look at the LWB bed my body shop (Curt) said he had for sell and yes...in my opinion it is worth $1500 GET READY TO DROOL. This is a 1971 GMC bed that was taken off the original truck back in 1972 and has been in dry storage since then. It has all the lower moldings which are in very nice condition and the bed looks like it just came from the factory. I can't use the GMC tailgate thats on it (shucks) since my truck is a Chevy but I bought a very nice 70 CST tailgate about ten years ago for about $75 that I will use. I looked underneath the bed and zero rust! I got plenty of extra pics so if you want to see more let me know. So down the road I will have a nice/decent fairly rust free LWB bed for sale. Good floor but the sides are not.I know some will say that is way to much $$$...but to make one good lwb bed out of two will be costly labor wise and it still won't be as nice as this bed. Yes...down the road I will sell the GMC tailgate but I need to do some research to see what I want to price it at. My truck will go into the body shop in about 2-3 weeks for its transformation.

A woodgrain tailgate band with CHEVROLET on it will let you use that sweet gate!
see ten;2457044]A woodgrain tailgate band with CHEVROLET on it will let you use that sweet gate![/QUOTE] I was trying to think of a way to use this tailgate but with the raised GMC letters it wouldn't look right. As mentioned I have a really nice tailgate off a 70cst that I will use. I will end up selling the GMC tailgate down the road. I feel very fortunate to find this bed.

Re: LWB Take-Off bed looks brand new WOW

Ok...70cstjr just called and said it looks like a swb and not a lwb? Curt said it was a lwb and I thought it was a lwb...don't tell me i just bought a mint swb. The more I look at it the more confused I am getting. Must be an old age thing. I guess I will call Curt to verify the bed. My thought after looking at the picture...with it off the truck one's mind can play tricks. When I looked at it it looked like a lwb. I'm getting a headache.

Thanks...After 70cstjr called he was convinced it was a swb...then I started to think...bad idea. I was starting to convince myself it was a swb bed. I can sleep well tonight. Thanks again!

I'd like to see that thing after a wash and wax job out in the sun.

BTW, it's a longbed, when in doubt count the stake pockets!

Looks like a longbed..Without a cab and frame for reference, these can easily be mistaken as shortbeds..But don't feel bad if you bought a rust free immaculate short fleet bed,it's probably worth $2000-$2500 to someone!

Holy crap! What a deal, you did well to get that. There's nothing like straight original sheetmetal.

Re: LWB Take-Off bed looks brand new WOW

I think we all know a guy that buys take off gates. You just don't find very many take off gates with the bed attached. Great deal.
If someone says you paid too much, tell them to price aftermarket long bedsides.
My point exactly.

Re: LWB Take-Off bed looks brand new WOW

I have a question for you experts...I realize that after much detective work we know this bed came off a GMC (Tailgate) soooooo...Is the trim on this bed the same as the trim on my 70cst? I realize I cannot use the tailgate because of the raised GMC letters, but how about the trim. Thanks in advance.

Lightbulb Re: LWB Take-Off bed looks brand new WOW

Why can't you use the gate?

Didn't the GMC's with the Sierra Grande trim have a tailgate band?

The other trim is the same on a Chevy..However, the lower trim looks to have a black center. You need the woodgrain tape for a CST...

Re: LWB Take-Off bed looks brand new WOW

I have a Chevy and this tailgate has raised GMC letters on it. I bought a very nice dent/rust free 70cst gate a number of years ago that I will use. I will eventually sell or trade this gate some time down the road. I might be wrong but I thought the trim for the 70st was black? I'll have to go take a look next time I get back to the homestead. PS...I just looked at some of the pics of my truck and I can't tell if its black or wood trim. Maybe it is wood trim. Hey...what do I know?

Re: LWB Take-Off bed looks brand new WOW

Wow! Talk about finding the holy grail of beds! I didn't know that anything like this even existed anymore! $1500 is quite a bargain considering the parts and labor that it would take to duplicate this one with new aftermarket parts, and it still wouldn't be anywhere near as good as this one! You lucky dog! I'd keep the GMC tailgate if it were me. Put a tailgate band onit and use it, or just keep it for a spare. Too hard to replace if you ever needed to. ...Joe

Re: LWB Take-Off bed looks brand new WOW

Now that I see that the trim pieces on this GMC bed are differrent than the 70cst wood grain trim...is it worth the trouble to try and salvage these pieces? Will the trim come off easy or is it a pain in the ear lobe?
