Boxing the Frame

Has anyone boxed the frame on a 67-72?

I'm planning on strengthening my frame, and was wondering if it would help to box it in for added support?

Yea this would definately add support, or you could reinforce the frame with steel inside the frame. But It really depends on what you want, if you want a show winner, box it, if you want a beefed up frame, just reinforce it. Just my 2 cents.

Unless you need to stiffen the frame for racing, severe duty, or to add a weld in front suspension crossmember, The frame should do fine as the factory shipped it.....crazyL

no, but i have boxed about a 2 foot section of my dad's 66 dodge frame after we added in 16 inches. we used some 1/4 inch floor plate that we had laying around. makes it look pretty tough. good luck, Ben

I have boxed the frame on my C30 from the engine mounts back to behind the cab. I felt that the frame was too flexible after I added 13 feet in the middle. If you are going to box the frame for competition or show, it might be just as easy to make your own frame out of 3x5 rectangular tubing. I used to build metal boats, and it was a royal pain fitting the inner panel. If you are dead-set, I could mail the patterns I made for my frame. If you think your frame is the same as a C30.

No I won't be doing any showing, it's all for towing. So strength is more important than the looks for me.
I talked to a few people about this and they told me not to box the frame because it will make it to stiff and prone to crack much easier? They said just reinforce it.

Those old frames were designed to flex, &should hold up well in stock form. In a case like Duallie's truck (with that long stretch), The boxing he did was a very good idea! the center of the frame(under the cab) takes a lot of stress. If you look at the 1 ton frames, they have a taller section height in that area, as compaired to a 1/2 or 3/4 ton. crazyL
