need help figuring some stuff out... - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I pieced my truck together a few years ago, from different parts
now i am in the finishing stage and i need to figure out what parts to buy so that i know they match up.

Under the steering column there is a bracket that i a missing, but i dont know what year to buy if they differ or anything,
I also need all of the parts to get the steering column to fit perfectly. It is in there but a little loose.

I also want to get a brake booster, and i was wonder what i am going to need to get to accomplish this task such as...
new master cylinder, new plunger from the brake petal, etc

I also need a new gas petal just have the bar now, but i dont know what year the parts are from, so i dont know what year to petal to buy, will any one fit

I know these are a lot of questions, and i dont have pictures, but if you know if there are any differences that you could help me out to figure this stuff out with that would be great, thanks

What year is your truck? Is it 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive, pickup, blazer, burb, 1/2 ton 3/4 ton or ? And is it a Chevy or GMC? Lots of the parts are interchangable (67-72), some of the 1960 to 66 and GM trucks use the same parts as well. Also some of the 74-80 GM trucks parts will work as well. You shd. get a parts catalog from LMC (just check google to find their website) they are free and have pretty good diagrams in them. You might want to get a 1967-1972 Chevy GMC Truck Assembly Manual (white & red cover on the front of it) check the vendors on the board or e-bay. As far as the gas pedal goes they used 2 different kinds for our trucks (1967-1972) 1967-1970 are the same (there are 2 small studs that screw into the floorboard and the lower part of the gas pedal pushes on to them) & 1971-1972 are the same (these type don't rest on the floor at all). The steering colum cover (that bolts under the dash shd. be the same for all the 67-72's. I have not done a powerbrake upgrade so I'm not sure on that one. Welcome to the board by the way, Doug

thank you, its "72" but more of a frankenstein of years, a lot of parts worked so if i found one that did i threw it on,

Now i want to do thing right so i am looking for the correct parts to fit with the parts i have

as far as the brake booster...it is all about how much you want to spend.
companies like
CPP
and
Early Classic have new booster, masters and proprotioning valves for '72 front disc brake set ups.

Early Classic's booster is about $250 and your probably looking at around $20 for a Reman '72 Master from your local parts supplier. a '72 Disc Brake Prop Valve will run around $100 new from those two vendors...if you as one of the guys on the board who is parting trucks out such as "teeitup" he might have a used one for $25 or $30 or something, He might also have a good used booster for you.

the gas pedal....i'm pretty sure '72 cab's use a cable style pedal so you need a pedal from a '72. you didn't say what your your cab is so that is what i'm going to guess

as stated above all the steering column brackets are the same from 67-72

i dont know what cab i have, thats the problem i bought it off a guy who bought it off a guy type of deal...

how would i know is the main question

im gonna start getting my steering brackets this week so i will let you all know how that goes, but still i dont even know what to buy it has a little shake to it, i know i dont have a bracket that goes under the column near the front of the dash but what else could i be missing, if any of you could take pics of your set up that would be superb thanks

The 5th digit of the VIN# will be your year. If it is a 1967 the 5th digit will be a 7 and a 1972 the 5th digit would be a 2 and so forth.

If you are talking about the square cover that bolts onto the bottom of the brake/clutch pedal assembly and covers up the steering column, there are two styles. The first style is made for mounting a hand emergency brake lever. The second style is just flat, for use with a foot emergency brake pedal. I think the foot emergency brake pedals are from 71-72 trucks only. There's also a strap that attaches the steering column to the underside of the brake/clutch pedal assembly. The strap goes on before the cover. The column should also be clamped to a bracket on the engine side of the firewall.
