I have added disk brakes to my 67. How well will It stop without the booster?

it'll stop fine, you'll just need to press harder.

It should, but there's a lot riding on the "IF's"....

The vacuum booster just increases the force applied to the master cylinder. If you are young and strong of leg, you should be able to lock the brakes and scare the crap out of everyone else on the road with you!!

Supposedly, you will have to depress the pedal harder with disc brakes. You have less surface area, but the main reason is that drums brake shoes actually expand against the drum when stopping. The best explanation I've found, is in "How stuff Works." Believe it or not, they have a good example of how they operate.

if you seen mike nutts build he has this set up. it stops just fine , but you do have to make up for the booster with your leg.

I had a 72 Camaro .. dics/drum setup. It didn't have power brakes.

Re: "Never seen disk brakes without power." I guess what I should have said is "worked on" or "driven."

I've replaced a lot of brake shoes and pads on vehicles, but I've never worked on or driven a disk brake vehicle without power. So, I really have no personal knowledge of how much more pressure you would use on one versus the other...

My Dad's 72 Chev truck had manual disc brakes. Manual discs were standard equipment were they not?

There's no clear answer to your question.Manual discs should work fine.So should manual drums.That is if they are in good shape.Actually drums should have more friction surface and theoretically should be better at stopping your truck but the discs radiate heat away faster and the heat is what causes brake fade.I'm in the process of converting to power discs,mostly because I want a lower stance and I do a lot of driving in heavy traffic.The reduced fade should be good for that.Serviceability is also enhanced by discs.You probably wont see much difference in pedal pressure but you will have better repetetive braking.Hope this helps you.

mine has no booster and it is disc/drum and it stops fine . hell it stop better then alot of new cars i drive at work

My '71 C-10 came with manual disc brakes. I like the way they feel, but they do take more force to operate.

I can lock them up if I want without any problem, but I like the control manual brakes gives me.

My son put power disc brakes on his '70 C-10 short bed and he likes them but they feel a little touchy to me.

Praise Brake Dyno (website??) has/had kevlar brake linings that they said would put a lot of other braking materials to shame. Saw an article in a magazine about them and they were quite complimentary. Drum brakes that stopped better than any 4-wheel power discs, they said.
