I'm going to be selling a truck

and was wondering how much difference do y'all think the matching numbers make? Plus how the heck can ya tell, I've been all over the net tryin' to figure out these numbers?

If the truck is stone stock and and or "restored" matching numbers are a big deal as it means that the truck is all original and has the original engine block and transmission in it. If it is a modified truck it isn't a big deal at all to most people and most don't expect a highly modified truck to have matching numbers. Bragging rights for a stock truck not too important for a modified truck.

If I was restoring my 71 to 100% show room stock original I'd dig the original block out of the corner of the garage and rebuild it along with the original heads and go out and get the original turbo 350 out of the transmission pile and rebuild it so that all the numbers matched the truck. But as it stands I don't really care about that as the truck is getting a Cadillac 500 and turbo 400 out of an ambulance and the rear end is getting changed to a 3.55 Posi.

If this pic is from your 67-72, then it is not the original engine.

If that's a small block Chevy, I'm guessing you have a 1975 350 with a 4 barrel carb.

TYR 1975 350 165 4 van & bus

The V is a plant code, the 0804 (I think that's August 4th) is a build date and the TYR is the engine code.

Thank you , I did not think it was the original motor but I though I'd check. The truck is a 72 with a 350 in it.

the only way you can prove the engine/trans are original to the truck itself is if you have the factory build sheet.

The only way I know of to determine originality of the engine is with the Protect-o-plate. Mine has the build date and code of the engine, trans, and rear end on it. Otherwise if you know the build date of the truck and engine, you can at least see if the dates make sense. Typically the engine is 2-4 weeks older than the truck. My build sheet has an engine code but no engine build date (unless I am not seeing it somewhere on the buildsheet).
