Exhaust Poll

Yes, another poll. This time I can't make up my mind on which exhaust system to use. They all have their pros and cons. Either I want the Magnaflow 2.5" stainless system for $500.00 or have another made using 2.5" pipe with Flowmasters for around the same price. Or, what other system is out there? What do you think???

Re: Exhaust Poll

I like the magnaflow sound over the flows myself, I have a magnaflow on my diesel and flows on the 68 and 97, but the flows are coming off, Im actually going to run the hooker aerochamber its a similar design to edelbrocks muffler at a fraction of the cost

Re: Exhaust Poll

The big question is what do you like better? I personally think the Magnaflow sytem with the x-pipe setup sounds too high pitched and raspy. I klnow a guy with a custom bent 2.25" system with Magnaflow mufflers and no x-pipe and it sounds really nice.

I had a custom built 2.5" system built at a local shop with Flowmaster Super 40's for right at $400.00. It was a bit pricey, but the Super 40's are a little higher than others. I was actually gonna have Magnaflow mufflers installed after hearing the truck stated above because they're not as expensive, but he only had one muffler. I love the way it sounds! The Super 40's have a deep rumble and aren't as loud as original 40 series. You can tell I have a small block in my truck, but you have to really listen to make sure it's not a big block IMO.

The Magnaflow system is nice with stainless pipe and mandrel bends, but even after you pay to get it, you still have to pay someone to install it. That is, unless you're pretty savvy with a cutter and welding. The system is made for LWB trucks so it can be fit down for SWB trucks, so it still has to be cut and fitted first. It's also made for headers, so if you're using manifolds, you'll still have to have pipes made to connect them.

My vote is for a custom built system with whatever kind of mufflers YOU like.

Lightbulb Re: Exhaust Poll

i've worked in the same muffler shop for over 22 years and i usually judge which muffler to use by the persons age. mid 30s on up i try to sell magnaflows--they're more mellow at cruising speed.late teens up to early 30s usually get flows-- they have a resonance noise at cruising speed that can be annoying to some people.

Re: Exhaust Poll

Steve- Flowmaster has a U-Fit kit that has been pretty popular considering it's all mandrel bends and over the axle pieces and any configuration you could think of! If you are coming out in front of the wheels it's not worth buying because you will not use much of the kit. http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...1_10263:metal:

Re: Exhaust Poll

I'm running headman long tube 1 3/4'' primary into 2 1/2'' flowmaster 50 series delta flow angled out in front of the rear tires with 2 1/2'' pipes. This is behind a STOUT 388. It sounds great.

Re: Exhaust Poll

I think everyone has a certain "special" sound they want to achieve when installing an exhaust system. In my younger days I really liked the exhaust note I got on my 68 Chevelle w/396 running Thrush turbos thru 2.25 in. pipes.

On my truck I went the "cheap alternative" route, and ran 2.5 in. pipes with Summit Racing welded mufflers that turn out just forward of the rear wheel.
I have to admit, they sound nice at idle, but are a bit louder than I wanted when I stomp on it.(2500+ rpm)

Re: Exhaust Poll

I've got a 3'' single exhaust series 40 on my suburban that I like the sound of and recently I had a magnaflow put on my 69 GMC which is also a 3'' single. Magnaflow is a lot quieter. Performance, from what I could tell is about the same. Different trucks though. Both small blocks

I'll take that challenge. I have long tube headers 2.5" into Flow 40s and out the side before the rear (no crossover). Oh and that's fed by a 476; daily driven Unless you run open headers...

My vote is for magnaflow because I'm sick of the flows resonance. But the flows do sound wicked at idle and WOT.

Just rolling by near idle or parking I set them off sometimes I'm switching to 3" with x-over and some quieter mufflers (maybe magnaflow)soon. So you'll have me beat then for sure.

Thumbs up Re: Exhaust Poll

I'm running a set of Sanderson 3/4 length headers, 2.5' pipes right out to the back with 4' s/s tips. Oh yea just about for got running Flows.

I ran until a few days ago Headman full length headers and that resonence at 50 mph was clearly notciable. With the 3/4 length Sandersons the exhaust sounds richer, a lot fuller not so much of a low drone.

esll.

I prefer a single 3 inch system... a 3 inch flows the same as 2 - 2.5s (hydraulics is strange that way)

Re: Exhaust Poll

A lot of good info.....I've heard that Magnaflow system sounds like a Ferrari. Can anyone comment on that? I guess that's what might be holding me back from getting that system. I like the idea of a complete stainless setup, and at a good price as Magnaflow.

Re: Exhaust Poll

I have forgotten the link but there are a couple of sites out there with sound clips of popular vehicles with different brands of mufflers to compare. Maybe exhaust soundclips.com or something like that. Probably search Magnaflow or Flowmaster and get the link.

Re: Exhaust Poll

Please... no more Flowmasters.

Every truck, SUV, car, 4-wheeler, & quarter horse has a Flowmaster.

Stop the madness & go with something that sounds like a classic truck. Go w/ glasspacks..

I finally posted this last night. I don't have any vids from the outside yet. Here's one of a ride along in my 68. Remember, I have no interior or insulation yet in this video, so it won't be as loud inside the cab after interior is done.
