hard to turn
my truck is hard to turn the wheel and i need help on were to lube it up to make it turn easy. my truck is a short step 69 and it dosnt have a place to put power steering liquid so i think it didnt come with it, so im guessing it needs to be lubed?
if u guys can help me on were to lube it, it would be cool! pics would be good too! thanks! |

These things can be beasts with no power steering.
A couple optoins - the obvious one is to add power steering. Other options include a larger steering wheel or skinnier front tires.

Sounds like you may have the optional "Armstrong" power steering.Or on a 40 year old truck someone may just have removed the PS pump and it would be a bear to turn.
You may help it a bit by crawling under over and around the front suspension with a grease gun,but don't expect miracles.Put 3-4 shots of grease in each zerk.Check your tire pressures also. If you can take pics of the steering box we may be able to help more.There are lots of members who have updated to PS also. Does the steering get easier when you are moving? Give a few more details on what you are dealing with.

After you've done and checked all what was mentioned above and it's still stiff, you may need to lube the steering shaft in the column. Grease gets hard and makes it harder to steer and shift if you have 3 speed column like mine did.
This is not easy if you're not mechanically inclined or familiar with steering columns. Some guys have just sprayed WD40 down the tube and worked it back and forth. In my case it didn't help very much when I spray lubed the shaft on mine loooong time ago. I actually had to remove my column from the truck and literally remove the tube and shaft, clean it and regrease it. You man not have to get this drastic. |

Adding power steering is likey your best bet. Most of the old manual steering boxes have leaked all of the lube out by now. A new/rebuilt manual box really does not turn all that hard. Problem is most of the manual boxes are half worn out, have have the adjusting screw tightened to take out the slack and then they bind up and turn hard.
We have a 1970 with 265/70/17 tires on front and the manual box and it turns pretty good, box is a llitle loose though. Not going to put any money into the manual box, going to power steering and a smaller steering wheel when the time comes.
