Rear Suspension: Coil vs. Leaf Springs
I had some questions about the design of both rear suspensions. Not about which is better but more about which parts interchange.
From what I understand, Chevy trucks came stock with coils but could be ordered with leaf springs, and GMC's came stock with leafs but could be ordered with coils. Is this right ? Are the rear axles different as far brackets (Spring pads vs. spring cups ? Trailing arm mounts) ? I'm guessing they are but i've never been able to compare them side by side. How involved is it to convert to a leaf spring setup ? Will a 73-80 truck rear end work or is the width different ?? |

Re: Rear Suspension: Coil vs. Leaf Springs
Yes to all your questions up to the converting one.The answer to that is it can be don`t by adding proper mounts.Prolly not worth the trouble.Better to look for what you need.The`73-ups are same width as`70-up and will swap.Although the springs are farther apart after`72,I believe.I only know this for sure on 4wds.On all trucks, the 4wd leafs sit closer together than the same year 2wd.
