Question moog tie rod confusion

When I opened the Moog boxes for my tie rods I only got one that appeared to be a Moog. I bought these from Oreilly's Auto Parts and they are the 71-72 tierods.

Has anyone else experienced this? I've search the board and seen that these are maybe some type of rebrands? Are they just as good or should I take them back and make clear that I want the tierods ends to have the Moog stamp on the bottom?; so I know without a doubt they are indeed Moog. It really kind of bugs me that they are not all the same without the Moog boot or stamp, they just seem cheap; feel like I've been duped :-/

Help?

The "I don't know what they are tie-rods" (came in Moog Box)

The Moog Tie Rod

Re: moog tie rod confusion

I know back when I sold auto parts that all the manufacturers are known for reboxing their parts.

Re: moog tie rod confusion

Looking on the Moog site they have both the ES403L and the ES415RL looking like the first set of pics I posted. They do not have the problem solver stamp or the tighter fitting moog stamped boot.

So I guess what I have is Moog, but doesn't explain why I got two totally different looking tie rod ends for the inners

Re: moog tie rod confusion

20 years ago when I first started in the auto world Moog had their own in-house engineers and would put out really quality stuff. In the mid 90's they were bought out by Federal Mogul when FM and Dana started buying up smaller companies.

My understanding is FM pretty much just bought them for the name. If someone knows different from me please correct me, but I think now its anyones guess on who actually manufactured the parts you get.

There are only a few companies who actually manufacture parts, and I doubt Moog makes their own parts anymore.

I had the same thing happen to me from Advance. I took the oddball no name one back. They reordered and one stamped moog came in. The saleguy said it looked like someone put a cheap one in the box and returned at some point. Said he had seen it happen a couple of times.

Re: moog tie rod confusion

Thanks for the replies. Everywhere I have looked online shows them without the Problem Solver stamp. I'm going to try to see if my Oreilly's store can get me the real deal with the stamp just to satisfy my peace of mind... If not.

Can anyone recommend a brand that would be better than what Moog has claimed to be. Been looking at the POL stuff but they don't list anywhere who makes there stuff or if it is made in the USA.

Re: moog tie rod confusion

Moog isn't any better anymore is what I heard from a very trusted mechanic. They sold their name to a cheap manufacturer. (Reminds me of Craftsman going to China. I had ball joints from O'Rilies ball-joints turn out bad right out of the box. Talk about a bad thing. a whole day for me lost. I only buy Napa parts including front end components. They have a lifetime warranty and they don't want to have to pay for replacements, all Napa is quality. The lower prices of O'Riles and Autozone, Pep Boys etc.. is tempting and sometimes the parts will work butif you want parts that will fit, work and last then Napa is the way to go. Use the other guys for fluids and filters. Just one man's opinion.

Re: moog tie rod confusion

no NAPA's here in Springfield, MO. It's overun with O'reillys.

Everywhere I look online just points to the same part number and they all have the same look as what I have, except for the one stray stamped Moog.

Re: moog tie rod confusion

A lot of parts places have a cheap version and a "professional"version. Usually the professional versions are made better.

No Napa's would be horrible. Steelhorse is right, ask for the professional.

Also, it could be just me but your first pic looked higher quality when you examine the boot and rod.

Re: moog tie rod confusion

I thought I was getting professional replacement parts when i asked for and paid extra for Moog. As far as the rods themselves the one stamped Problem Solver just seems better built and as far as the boots go the Moog boot was preinstalled on the Rod and is sealed very tight against it and feels much thicker... the other boot is thinner and slips off when I move the end around... but it mostly likely won't once installed.

Re: moog tie rod confusion

Well I never could get the actual straight of this but from what I gathered; is that both of the above ends are moog; just the one stamped Moog is old stock. I exchanged it for one that matched the rest. Box said made in USA and these are all unpainted so I assume they are USA made. No way would these make it across the salty sea from china without rusting. Which is why I believe the cheap Chinese ones are painted.
