1967 with an overdrive 3 on the tree???
Look what came into the shop today. The customer wants to explore the possibilities of being able to drive this truck 70mph down the freeway. Right now it has a 250 with a three on the tree but when I got in the truck I noticed and overdrive pull handle so I checked the spid and found that it said overdrive transmission. Can someone explain what this is.

Re: 1967 with an overdrive 3 on the tree???
i have one of those....... mine works like a champ.... its an overdrive.. mine comes in while in 2nd and high gear... depending on the position of the cable and the speed of the vehicle...... the owner should be happy with cruise speed if the o/d unit is working...
if not.. there is an inline fuse that powers the Solonoid... this is the first place i would look..

Re: 1967 with an overdrive 3 on the tree???
That '67 inline 6 with the 3 on the tree prolly has 4:11 gears in the rear. Even with the old school OD it will rev out pretty good at highway speeds.

Re: 1967 with an overdrive 3 on the tree???
Ok I guess we will have to drive it and try the cable. Can you pull the cable while driving or should you pull it out before you take off??

Re: 1967 with an overdrive 3 on the tree???
when u get it into 2nd or 3rd gear u have to lift on the gas petal and u should feel it go into o/d might want to check under it to see if it still has the o/d in it still could have been taken out at some point

Re: 1967 with an overdrive 3 on the tree???
i just leave the O/D engaged(cable)... take off like normal... and as mentioned above.
at speed, in 2nd gear.. reduce pressure on the go pedal, and you should feel it engage..feels like another gear change.

Re: 1967 with an overdrive 3 on the tree???
If they don't want that extremelly complicated overdrive anymore I'll take it, would work real good on my 67 Slant Back.

Re: 1967 with an overdrive 3 on the tree???
They work pretty good, the drawback has always been the decell freewheeling. No compression braking at all when OD is engaged. Standard ratio was 4.10 in the trucks. They were only offered in the C10 and really are not heavy enough for a tow truck. There are much better choices out there.

Re: 1967 with an overdrive 3 on the tree???
Well I looked underneath and no solenoids, nothing but an electrical connector dangling and the overdrive cable pushed through a hole in the frame. Well I guess that answers that.

Re: 1967 with an overdrive 3 on the tree???
So swap in a 3:73 rear and a 700R4/200R4 and let them get after it.That should put 70 about right.

Re: 1967 with an overdrive 3 on the tree???
SS Tim thanks for the pics and explanation. I can clearly see from your pics that this trans is no longer an overdrive transmission.
