New Green bean

Made a run up to northern Oregon this weekend and drug this '70 k20 4x4 home. 1,570 miles round trip.

Overall the trucks in pretty good shape, cab has some rust on passenger floor, drivers door, solid drip rails and a few bubbles here and there. Bottom of doors have some interesting tape, which I'm assuming is covering some rust. Supposively I bought this from the third owner (who had an obsession w/ lights and red fingernail polish).......who bought it from #2 who had "restored" it. PO painted about every bolt head or screw head he could with red nail polish!!

Not sure if it's the original 350, will have to check some numbers. Turbo 350 auto w/ a B&M shifter and I think an Eaton ho52 rear axle and Dana 44 front. Unsure of gears but guessing 4.10's.

Seems to be an original 4x4 that isn't too hacked up but definitely has some "customization" by the PO that needs to be removed.
Front steering stabilizer bolted to leaf spring!
Wires strung around this truck like Christmas lights on a house!
Tach and gauges bolted to top of dash pad
Stickers.......lots of stickers!
Bald mudders mounted on the old US Indy mags 15x10 8 lug.

But, gotta love the gun rack mounted in the back window!!

Thanks, that's how I felt when I saw her! I couldn't get the owner to verify the vin so it was an added bonus when the #'s matched.

Re: New Green bean

Nice project, that looked like a rockin ride on the way home with the truck pretty much bigger than the floor of the trailer.

Yeah, that thing just about fit on that trailer, ey? That thing is cool as is, but needing all the tacky rash scrubbed off. Those 15" 8-luggers are cool. At least no one can say tires are hard to get. I didn't see all the red nail polish. I wonder if previous owner would change his tune if a fat chick with freshly done red nails wanted a ride.

She barely fit on that trailer. With those 10" wide rims and 127" wb it was tight.......kinda like a fat girl in a.....uh i mean

It was quite the adventure!
We pulled up ay 6:45 am,
It was 16 degrees,
Truck was covered in ice,
Took some massaging to get her to start.
Then that EXTREMELY loud screeching noise that woke the neighbor.
Starter needs to be replaced.
Next was flat tire, then broke the bead,
Transitioning into old split rims which required hot water to bust loose from frozen carpet (dont ask).
Trip to town to air up split rims.
Result is 1 semi okay split rim with tire,
Load truck on trailer,
Spewing PS fluid everywhere due to high pressure line not being high pressure.
Truck is on trailer.............barely.
She rode great all the way home.....like a fat girl in a.....

Neighbor kid came by and is saying those old Mags are worth a pretty penny. Being 15" 8 lug. Guess we will see.

Re: New Green bean

thought it looked like one of those padded decals, but then seeing the surface rust on drivers side in the same spot and about the same size got me wondering if factory... but I guess he could have got two of them stickers out of a gum-ball machine, and maybe some big chick stole the other while pretending to paint her nails!?

At first I was like "hmmm, don't recognize those Chevy emblems" then upon closer inspection the flames in the "4x4" part was a dead give away lol. I was a little disappointed in the PO for not having one on the drivers side as well.....tsssk tssk!
I peeled the kragen 4x4 emblem off and there's a little blemish under neath which is making me think that's why it was there in the first place.
Lol, I'm thinking he might have traded the drivers side emblem for a bottle of nail polish, bright red!

That looks like a great base to work on. Most of the tacky add-ons will come off pretty easy. Congrats!

Yes sir, most of the crap I want gone is pretty easy to cut off, tear off, unbolt or remove. I have a "few" things I want to fix or change.......
-Swap out flat bed with one from anther truck, other bed will be lower.
-Side mirrors will be replaced
-New dash pad
-New gauges (not wobbly mounted on dash with one bolt)
-Already fixed ps high pressure hose
-Remove finger nail polish from 137 bolt heads
-Remove 53 wires run randomly around truck for the multiple lights.
-Remove 34 of 36 lights
-Fix all the wire connections and splices that have wires twisted together and wrapped in electrical tape
-Replace fried positive battery cable, battery neg/ground cable and both battery terminals
-Remove 19 misc stickers on underside of hood
-Fix starter issues
-Remove stickers including the "No Fat Chiks" sticker from dash
-Remove CB antenna

Gun rack is staying put lol.

Just his one of the engine bay so far, I'll try to get some more soon

Smile Re: New Green bean

looks like a VERY good start. is the new, lower bed so it will be easier to pick up the fat chicks-you can get a few of em up there and have plenty of room in the cab for another one. better stock up on "hot rod red" nail polish first.

Re: New Green bean

seeing as you have tall valve covers and hei, maybe next time you are under there you can tell me approx. how much space you have between each cover and the firewall, as well as the distributor?

btw, what is this in the pic?
- maybe for putting notches in the dash pad as if it were a headboard??
- or maybe a cam mount so the "chiks" could web cam on the go? hehe

Re: New Green bean

Looks like a cool start, definitely a little bit of cleaning up and sorting out to do but looks like it's got a lot of potential. I'd address that rubber fuel line running over the exhaust manifold first and foremost! Welcome to the K/20 club, there are a bunch of us on here and all of us love a K truck of any shape or form.

Definitely better condition than my 68. Overall it's not too bad. A few more fixes and it's a driver. Right now I'm battling a starter issue. Going to try shims tomorrow.
I'm in the process of de-funkin' this truck.......fuel line over manifold, bungee cord battery hold down, stripped steering wheel bolt, worn out water pump bearing.....
Not building a show truck but I want it to be rock solid, dependable and clean. Won't be a daily driver but a ranch/using truck. I'll use it to haul hay, run around town, hunting, pull horses occasionally and just enjoy.
I've got a buddy that said driving down the road in my 68 was like getting a big slice of freedom, lol. Thought that was pretty fitting.

Re: New Green bean

Got some work done on the Green Bean the last few months........swapped the motor and put a 4 speed in, dana 60 front with some new rubber n rims. All Pro Cross over steering and new PSC 2wd steering pump, brake booster and master cylinder. Installed a van tilt column and new steering wheel. About to pull the flat bed off and possibly go with a fleet side bed or may put another flatbed on....decisions decisions.

Definitely want to replace the springy stock seat, get a dash pad, mount speakers in doors and fix the sagging drivers side door (rusted at hinge).
