Good things (SWB bed) come to those who wait...and wait..and wait

Well I picked this one up last weekend (THANKS ROB!!)...and spent a few hours yesterday and today taking it apart...yes, you heard me right..a "few" hours..I'd say it only took me around 4 hours total..maybe 5 at the most.

Two reasons..I think..I've been PB Blaster-ing all the bolts every night for the past week...so every thing could soak really good...but I had to come up with a way to remove the @#$% carriage bolts myself...since I was taking the whole bed apart with no help available.

So I thought about it..and came up with this handy little tool...I thought I'd share it with you guys..just a simple little piece of 2x4 cut to length, with angled ends..and used as a wedge to keep the carriage bolts from turning...I still had to cut about 6 off..but thats not bad...and here are some pics of the bed...it's in REALLY nice shape for locating it down here!

When I remove carriage bolts like that, I just weld old lug nuts to them and throw a wrench on them. You can actually then just weld the stud of the bolt you just removed onto the head of the next bolt to remove, thus doing an entire bed with around five lug nuts. I think you'd be able to get some at a local junkyard for free. I get mine at work where we've got about two 5-gallon buckets full.

Yeah...I had thought about that (welding a nut to them)...but since the bed was upside down....and the additional time involved..this actually worked out rather quickly...

I just wedge it..and unscrewed the nut...simple and fast...I'd say if they were really rusted bad..then you'd have to weld on them...

Easiest and fastest way to get the carriage bolts out is simply tighten them till they break. Chances are you will be getting new ones anyhow.

Thats what I do,and as a matter of fact,I took a bed apart today...Have to use a grinder on the spot welds in the tailgate area though

Well to help out at least. HOA's wont let me around here, but I have a DA and a gun to go with the air and maybe some elbow grease. My price is the best deal you can get, pizza, beer, and a warm Sunday FL afternoon.
