Pretty much just what you can see, such as grille, name plates, and a few colors not offered on both. Leaf springs are more common on GMCs than Chevys and 3/4t trucks mostly had Dana 60s.

Re: chevy-gmc

not sure how true it is on these years trucks but origionally.... GMC used washers on all their bolts and Chevrolet didn't. I believe they changed that in the 60's (from what I'm told) could be an old wives tale

That is the real truth. Been like that ever since they were made. Chevy's were always the poor mans truck or work truck. GMC were for the guys who had money and didn't need to beat on them. GMC's were usually equiped with more "bling" so to speak back in the day and were more money.

But that's just the main difference as to why there are two brands instead of one. As far as actual trucks..exterior looks and few options I'd say are the main differences.

Doesn't it seem the opposite these days? GMC trucks are referred to as "professional grade". But a lot of things have changed, back in the 70s people bought trucks for hard doing work and they had a tough life. Today most new trucks see pavement for most of their lives and just haul families around or the occasional haul from the lumber yard or weekend boat trip. I am not even sure what the differences are in todays GMCs and Chevys.

Re: chevy-gmc

In 1971, the front fenders, grill, bumper, and core support is different. Most of the GMC's came with rear leaf springs, and some of the trim moldings are different.

Re: chevy-gmc

the entire front clip is different in 1971 between Chevy and GMC. In 69 chevy changed the fenders and ran them till 72. GMC kept the 68 chevy fender till 72. the core support is differnt with the 4 headlight setup, front marker location requires a different bumper, the hood is also deferent becouse of the chrome trim on the front lip.

as mentioned above GMCs tended to be the fancier better optioned trucks compared to Chevys and were also a little more expencive. So GMCs tended to be the bosses truck and the workers tended to get Chevys
