brake upgrades?

any new and exciting products come out recently in the brake department?

after driving my mustang, and then driving the truck.... well, thats all i need to say.

truck has stock brakes right now, what would be the best cost efficent route to go upgrading? If i wanted to upgrade to larger rotors and new more than 1 piston calipers, would i also need a new spindle?

Re: brake upgrades?

I think you have two choices. This:
http://www.stainlesssteelbrakes.com/...D%29&year=1986
and this:
Baer Part# 4301052
http://www.paceperformance.com/index...&ProdID=136538

Both are significantly expensive. I'd go with Baer if I were going to spend this money as I really don't like the lack of engineering SSBC puts into their products.

Re: brake upgrades?

its not a kit, but i think somebody make 6 piston front calipers and somebody else makes cross-drilled rotors.

Re: brake upgrades?

If you have the light duty brakes like I do, you could go to the heavier ones. Of course, that requires a spindle change. Maybe consider rear discs like swervin installed?

Re: brake upgrades?

Eric didn't you install drop spindles? What rotor did you go back with then?

Re: brake upgrades?

I personally would prefer a 14" or larger rotor, it may seem small, but i have 16" dually rims, so I think that's what my truck has with 4 piston calipers and even with toasted rear brakes (i drove 5 miles the other day with e-brake floored) it still stops in a decent manner.

Re: brake upgrades?

i really like how the ssbc kits look, don't know anyone with them on these trucks but i know a ton of people running ssbc kits on older muscle cars.. not a single complaint..

i'm looking into getting the slotted rotors soon ($215 w/ pads..)

Re: brake upgrades?

Eric the most "cost Efficient" way to upgarde your brakes is use a performance pad. Check withHawk Performancefor better pads or Praise Dyno for crygenic treated brake kits.

Re: brake upgrades?

Eric,

I do not know much about your truck but here are a couple of things you might consider:

>If your engine cannot reliably produce about 18 inches of vacuum then your booster is not working up to its potential - you might consider a backup vacuum pump.

>If your engine vacuum is okay then you might consider installing a larger booster or a smaller bore master cylinder.

>Not sure if it will work but you might consider changing the pedal pivot point(s) to the manual brake locations so that the pedal has more leverage.

HTH,

HTH,
there isnt a problem with the brakes on the truck, they just suck from the factory

Take into account that you have larger wheels than what was stock, so it takes more to accelerate and slow it down because of the inertia of the larger wheels & tires. The was an article in Road & Track or Car & Driver about larger wheels and tires and this was one of there points. Once you get past a 2" increase in diameter, you have to take this into consideration. Have you considered a hyrodboost system like what is on a diesel? I know the one I have on my 79 whoas it down, and it isn't in the best shape.
