Re: Power steering conversion

Welcome to the chevy truck forum...

A lot of us have done it. What specifically is your question? You say you "have an inline six now but want to add p.s. to your 68." Is it the same truck?

If it is, my recommendation is to try to find a donor in a junkyard, ebay, this site, or wherever you can locate it. Any Chevy six from that era and up until the mid 70's will work. I took mine out of an early 70's El Camino.

Forgot to add... if you do locate a vehicle with p.s. Take everything you can out of it that pertains to p.s. All brackets and pulleys- even if you don't think you'll need them.

Re: Power steering conversion

Re: Power steering conversion

Make sure you get the brackets for the engine you have. The 250 brackets are different from the 292 brackets and the integeral head brackets are also different from the non-integeral head brackets of either size.Don't worry about the vehicle, you can get the brackets for a 250 from Novas,pick-ups,Malibu's chevelles,Camaros or anything else with a 250.Unfortunately if you have a 292 the only ones are on trucks,I'm not sure but I think the big trucks used the same ps pump and brackets. Also as stated above get all the engine pulleys.including the crank pully, water pump pully, and if possible any other accessory pulleys. It's much easier to toss something you don't need than to match something you don't have a part # for.

i have a 69 gmc and i found a 80 power steering set up fit fine. the only problem was the gearbox hit the bumper bracket so i had to notch it.
