70 C-10 Project Shop truck/ Racecar tow vehicle
Well never done a build thread but here goes nothing. ...
It all started as an idea to have an older shop truck to haul **** around and tow **** with... While searching Craigslist my Brother( user name: ART C10)had found this straight 1970 C10 inline 6 with 3 speed manual. Looked like it been sitting for a few years and like it been repainted a few times in its lifetime. So we drove down to Tucson and picked the truck up out of some junkyard/ repo lot. Originally we had swapped the fuel tank and changed fuel filter and adjusted the crab. Threw on a full CCP handling kit just to drop it ab it and for it to handle a little better, we drove it for a while hauling scrap metal and carp.it just felt way under powered and no way we could tow with it. Soo it began from there.. with the idea of a turboed 5.3 swap . as for some reason we like Throwing a turbo on everything.. Ripped out the 6 banger , picked up an aluminum GenIV 5.3 and a 4L80E trans. Rebuilt the 5.3 with .25 oversized pistons, ACL race bearings, New rings, Melling High pressure oil pump. Decided to go with BTR turbo Stage 1 cam kit with springs, retainers, push rods, New LS7 lifter , Upgraded trunion kit, APR head studs . The tore the 4l80E apart and upgraded the clutches to the Red reybestos , New Sonnax Solenoids , No walk bushings , Matted it to a Circle D specialties Billet triple disk torque converter,Dereal Deep cool pan , Strange engineering custom chrome molly drive shaft, Detroit locker true trac LSD diff, Mouser engineering axles , B&M deep Diff cover, Yukon Forges 1350 ends . We ended up Pulling the turbo, blow off valve and wastegate and injectors oof the race car . Garret GTX4502R 72mn, Tial 44mm wastegate , Tial 50mm ,Injector dynamics 1300CC. We couldn’t get around to just doing the typical flipped manifold turbo set up so we started mocking things up and fabricated our own manifolds, crossover, intercooler, charge pipes, downpipe, catch can , coolant overflow, intake… and so on For engine manegment we went with the HOLLEY Dominator standalone system with the transmission control, and there 7’’ digital touch display. Ethanol sensor so we can run both pump and E85 without having to manually change the tune, Holey Dominator fuel pump, We then though to our self’s , we can’t throw all these nice parts in a dirty old engine bay , well how about we clean it up just a bit and shoot it matte black…… Well it went a little further than that and we ended up shaving the fire wall and shot it the same color as our race car since we had just enough paint left for the fire wall. Then that all lead to stripping the frame painting it then all new brake lines and fuel lines new wiring, all new hardware , new control arms , bushings, will wood brakes, Wildwood master cylinder, Braided lines, ect…… you all know how that goes. …… We started the build Dec 2016 and had the truck up and running April 2017. Truck put down on 14psi : 648whp 663wtq on “AZ Flex fuel” E54 and 538whp 562wtq 91 oct pump gas Truck weighs : 3521LBS Since then we have worked on some suspension upgrades to get this thing to hook on the street as some may know it’s a bit hard when there is no weight in the bed of these truck. Then we moved on to the interior and couldn’t get around the 70’s dash and how to mount the Holley dash, Solid state switch panel, Electric shifter control, radio. So we came across a 64 c10 on craigslist and the dash looked like it would be a good canvas to mount the screens. We picked this truck up and basically only used the dash out of it, we had to shorten, extend certain areas and shave what we didn’t want. Then made out cut outs for the screens and flush mounted them all. As the truck sits now we think the next plans are getting the suspension dialed in and then body and paint once we are happy with where it’s at. Here are some photos of it along its build and where it stands Last edited by Elyte_t2; 02-15-2018 at 04:28 PM. Reason: typos |

Whoa, very cool. I might need some tips. I plan on doing an engine swap at some point in time as well. Gonna be a while though. Still waiting for the truck....

Wow. Fast work on a fast truck... Can you really tow with this setup? If I were driving it everything on the trailer would get left behind. lol

Re: 70 C-10 Project Shop truck/ Racecar tow vehicle
Thanks guys !
to be honest we still have yet to try towing with it . But will be here in the next month or soo we have a race coming up and we will be towing the race car with it and possibly racing the truck too just some test and tune passes. As far as towing with this set up it should do good. We had gotten in contact with BTR and Circle D specialties when choosing the cam and torque converter to be able to tow and they suggested the the cam and torque converter we went with . But i agree lol it be a little hard not to leave behind whats on the trailer with this set up . Although our Race car is 93 Civic and we tow it on an open flat bed trailer so its not that much weight behind the truck . added some pics so you get an idea of what it is. LOL Little 2.0L 4Cyl turbocharged making little under 1000Whp. But I know i know its not a Chevy ... |
