How long do they last
Hey everybody:
It's been a while since I post anything. I basically ask questions than answer anything since I am nery new in this truck world. Well, you never know, one day I may be able to answer something!. Until then, these are my new questions: How long do some parts like power steering component and front suspention/brake such as spindles last? The reason is, I am investigating to do the upgrades. I am just evaluating to buy the component new and do the changes one system at a time or buy a 80's truck as donor. another question, does 88 power steering box will bolt to my 67 c20? I know I have to dimple the frame for the box. By the way, anybody has a picture of a dimpled frame? Thanks. |

My 72 has all the original parts on the front suspension and steering. Even the wheel bearings are original. The truck has over 400,000 miles on it. But it's hard to guess on how long stuff will last...

this is the best pic i have right now. as far as the box i have heard that it is 69-87. make sure you have the right brackets for your motor though. as you can see by my pump it is not aligned right, i made my own bracket for the time being (that was like 8000 miles ago ) and if you use a newer box that has metric fittings then you are going to have to have a newer pump with metric as well. as far as the spindles, i have never heard of them going bad. i would change all bearings and raceways in the rotors though. ball joints and tierod ends too while you are in there.

Spindles last forever unless the bearings seize then they may go bad(because of scoring)But if they remain greased and they are properly torqued they should be good for a long long time,The other frontend parts will wear depending on the lube schedule and the use/abuse you put them thru.

Thanks for inputs and the picture. This might be stupid question but if I dimple the fram like that, doesn't weaken the frame?!

I'm with everyone else. As long as you pack your bearings well, grease everything, and put it back together right, the truck will outlast us all.

it might a little just from heating it up and cooling it down, but let it cool down on its own (dont put water on it) or it will make it more brittle
