flowmasters
can't decide on super 40's or 44's for my big block any suggestions

I put flow masters on my truck. They sound terrible. They are 40's. I should have put Magnaflow's on it.

Well I have to ask what are you looking for Sound, performance or both?? Dont get me wrong Flowmasters sound good but they do not flow that much better then say a stock GM muffler. Magnaflow is a little quieter but they flow a lot better then Flowmasters... And if you want a nice rumble that will still get pretty loud *like a race car/truck* then get a pair of Dynomax Bullet 18 Inch Race Mufflers...

super 40s for sure. They have a larger case which produces a much deeper sound. I have a pair of 3" dumped super 40s my 'Cuda and I get compliments all the time. Most people that hear it think I have a built 440 instead of a 340.

Here are my thoughts........I have been trying to find the right sound combination for years. I have taken the advice of many people on what sounds good and what is too loud. I have put 3+ exhaust systems on diffrent trucks of the past 4 years. I have not been pleased with any of them! The only way to tell what you are going to get is listen to a truck and ride in it that has the exact same set up as yours....or buy used mufflers and install them and see what they sound like. Headers v/s manifolds, pipe size, muffler type, dump location and muffler placement will alll change the sound.

I was thinking the same thing. The application on an f-body is way different. I had an LT1 equipped Z28 with Hooker Catback. Loved it! I never even considered flowmasters.

The only real difference the way that I understand between the 40's and the 44's are the size and outlet locations, (one is smaller and so it can be tucked better then the other) IIRC

I went with 70 series. Good sound, but that 1500 rpm drone is WAY less than the 40/44.

I have the Super 40's on my truck. I love the way it sounds. If I ever had to redo the exhaust, I would go with the 50 series just because I want it a little more quiet. My buddy had a set of Super 44's on his son's 72 Nova. I really didn't care for how it sounded. It wasn't rumbly and throaty like the Super 40's. It might be different with a big block though. He should be getting his bigblock 67 Nova back soon, and it will have Super 44's on it. If you're not in a hurry, I'll try to get you a sound clip as soon as I can.
I put a Magnaflow on my 94 F*#d. I HATE IT!!! It drones worse than any Flowmasters I've ever had. I actually get headaches at times when driving it. I may replace it with a 70 series Flowmaster or stock muffler eventually.

Just for info. most of the design of these mufflers were from a Texan who died a while back. Clester Andrews. He designed the high performance mufflers years ago and these companies started with his design. He ran a muffler shop in League City Texas.

On my 402BB I had Tri Y's, with 2 1/2" exhaust mated with 44's. At driving speeds I didn't like the drone so I switched to...factory manifolds, 2 1/2" exhaust with Spintech mufflers.
I will find out this spring if I made the correct decsion but BB's with these mufflers have the deep throaty BB sound but they are not suppose to have that drone issue that can get irratating. Good thread...

WHich Spintech mufflers??? They also have several.. It gets confusing, doesnt it. Seems mufflers are like stereo speakers... |

obviously its personal preferance, Im running long tubes, with 2 1/2" pipes, supper 44s, dump before the rear tire, 3" tail pipes. I love it but some may not,

have a 40 on my 91 k1500 with NO DRONE.. sounds awesome.... had 40's on my 71 prostreet with NO DRONE/RESONENCE etc... gonna be whatever you like the sound of the best... had a mag on my 96 z71 and it wasnt anything special sound wise...

I'm using an off brand and couldn't be happier. I'll jump under my truck and get the name. Decently mellow at idle and cruise but get on it and it lights up. I'll get a sound clip while I'm at it as well.

I think the super 44's and the 40's are similar but the supers are made to have less
cab resonance. I have full length headers going to 40 series flowmasters and dumped down and to the side. There is not as much cab vibration and they sound pretty good. I wish they were louder sometimes, but they do make noise. I liked the magnaflows but I hadn't heard any in my set up. All others to me sound like glass packs, which I am not too fond of
