Rusted Doors - best practices?
My truck has quite a bit of rust and the bottom of the doors around the rockers. What is the best method for handling this?
Is there a way to repair the doors with some kind of patch panel or should I buy new doors? I have a 1972 Cheyenne Super. Is there a difference in the doors for that model? If so, what doors can I use if I need to replace them. Thanks. |

Re: Rusted Doors - best practices?
lmc makes goog patch panels and this is the route i would go . I keep hearing ad things about aftermarket doors like gauge metal and fitment problems. So i would definitly path what youve got ! A pic showing the extent of rust would help to give further info .

The aftermarket replacement doors are disappointing. I would try to find nice used 1972 doors. I am sure some of the board members could assist you.

Re: Rusted Doors - best practices?
You can buy a set on here and have them shipped alot cheaper than the junk Repops you are thinking about, thats why I am building these trucks now instead of Chevelles, You can still get OEM parts at a reasonable price. I had a guy give me a good set of doors (no rust) for free, and I have seen good fenders for 40-60.00 all day long, even shipped that is cheeeeap!!

Man, I need to come out to Missouri if they're giving out free doors!!!..lol. Seriously, I am also in desperate need of a driver side door, willing to pay $$$$ for clean, rust free, dent free original door. I got 1 piece windows and WILL NOT work with repop doors.

Re: Rusted Doors - best practices?
Well, assuming that the rust is rather minor (if it were major I would suggest lower patch panels), but it would just consist of removing any rusty areas with a cutoff or saw, cut and form patches just for those areas, stitch them in slowly with a mig, grind them down, coat the inside of the door with a rust preventative. My old doors were rusted so bad the inside and outside of the door did no even meet anymore. I got some used rusty doors and am in the process now of doing this. I do it all the time, sometimes repairing rust on factory panels is a better way that just replacing them!
