Burb progress re-re-visited

Gotta love the weather we've been having. Gettin more done... but it's still slow going.
Had planned on messin with it yesterday, but my dad finally spent some cash on an old bike we've been screwin with, so that ment it was time for me to put forth some labor... like all afternoon and into the evening.
But, with the rebuilt carbs, lined tank, new this and thats installed... it's running pretty decent.
Still an old POS though. (82 nighthawk 650)

On to important stuff.
About 5 months ago, i picked this stuff up at jegs when I walked in there for some tune up stuff and valve cover gaskets.

It is the lower priced stuff, but not the bottom of the line craptastic stuff. I wanna say I dropped a 50 on it, but I can't remember, and i can't find it in there catalog. I need another roll, so i may well find out tomorow. it cuts fairly easily, and is pretty easy to work with.

Gotta have the shades on when working with reflective stuff in the sun.
Besides... chicks dig it.
Here's a big money piece that i kinda lucked into. I know this chick that came to me askin where to go to get her brakes done. I had no clue where to send her, and honistly, wanted nothing to do with it. I hardly have enough time as it is without adding one more job to do.
So she calls me up in tears... she was holding a $700 estimate in her hand... for one caliper, one rotor, and a set of pads.
I find my self in her garage the next day doing them. She wanted to pay me but I wasn't gonna let her. So then she said majic words.
"So what kind of burb parts would you want for the job?"
How about some carpet?
In all reality, she over paid me on labor, but there was no markup on the parts, and i got her a discount on them... it came out to be right about what she woulda paid had she gone to a *real* shop and not an oil chainge place.

I think we ordered too much too... but that's ok. I'm SURE I can put most of it to good use.

Note... if you're gonna use sizzors... get good ones, not crappy junk ones from the junk drawer in the kitchen.
So I got it to a general shape/size, then tossed it in the back, and started trimming where it needed trimmed

I actually used a razor... and didn't bleed!

I started in this corner, figuring the first corner would end up being the worst looking one. (I was right) I picked this one, since there is no door there, and the seat will be bolted in 99% of the time... it'll be well hidden.

Then on the passenger side, be sure to tuck the little bit into the chanel under the thresh hold.

Remember... you don't want it to look absolutly perfect. 2 bad things happen when you do;
1 No one believes that you did it, and they'll call you a lier.
2 once they do figure out that you did it... they'll nag you to do theres!
Now... we can move onto bigger and better things;

Remove trim... carefully and gently place them where nothing can happen to them.

Make sure you keep all your small screws, nuts and bolts and brackets all seperated in baggies that are well marked so you will have no chance of getting confused;

Pull all your crap out that you've been dragging around for months;

Peel the old nasty torn worthless rubber mat out, and inspect the floor underneath.

The only spot on mine that looks water damaged at all was the drivers side rear corner.

For those not in the know... all 67 - 72 burbs came with a plywood floor in the back. And, usually, they are in pretty good shape. They have to be treated pretty bad to rot out.

Time to test out a new tool i got for work... not too impressed with it, but it did the job at hand. You can see the rust at the bottom of the spare tire well. I used the brush on the drill to kick up gobs of rust dust as it pulled most of it off the metal. (no need to completely remove the rust with the POR15)

borrowed a small shop vac... expectid it to be junk, but it did a pretty darn good job. I may have to take a second look at these smaller units.

Still working out of the first quart of POR, I covered the bad part of the wheel well and the very end of the cargo area;


And finally... the seat got tossed in and 2 of the bolts put in since I have no where else to put it right now, but it makes a very nice image of what it'll be looking like.

So as far as time spent today, i think i was out there for about 3 1/2 to 4 hrs.
Money spent... only the sound Insulation, which I need to figure out what it cost me.
Hopefully tomorow I'll be finishing the cargo area, and polishing the chrome door sills.

It can be painted over rust, and it stops the rust. I have never used it so I dont know if it works.

Did the new carpet bring back the new car smell?

I have never used POR-15 myself but in another forum where they were showing professional restorations of top quality cars, and they said DO NOT USE POR-15. They said after a couple of years it peels right off leaving everything exposed again. They said to use something called Rust Bullet, I believe. They said it worked just like POR-15 but didnt peel off after time. Dont know if its true but they were very adamant about it.

drivethechevy... do a quick search on it, this is awesome stuff. You paint it over rust (POR.. Paint Over Rust) and it stops the rust in it's tracks. That's the claim, and while it is awesome, it isn't quite that awesome. I like putting it on virgin metal, or lightly surface rust. It does much better on that.

mint68... no, it didn't. I'm kinda p!ssed that it didn't!

Rick, the carpet is ACC, which means it'll probably fade to brown in a year or two. Seems to be the trend with there carpetting... at least... that's what I've been seeing reports of on here and elsewhere.

cameo... if the POR was peeling off, it wasn't put on right. We go through so much of it at work in our rad shop for semis, med duty trucks, and off road equipment and industrial stuff, and we've seen a reduction in tank rust out issues. We've done in house testing, it's good stuff.

72lb4x4... I'm just a dude man. off topic, if you are from a place as great as here, what in the heck did you to to deserve living there? (I lived there for 7 years)

Rod... I wondered if anmyone would catch that. If it gets taken apart for more than a week or two... I would actually do it right. But for a couple days... and a task as simple as this, just thrown them all in a container.

Hey Longhorn man first I want to say very nice suburban (should have mentioned that earlier). Second if you believe in POR-15 and use it alot then im inclinded to believe its good stuff. I can see where improper installation could lead people to believe its the product that sucks and not them.

it is one where you MUST read the directions. i laugh every time I hear someone complain "the glossy finish went away after a year, and it looks like crap... this stuff sucks" If they'd have read the can, they'd know why.
