neutral safety question

ok,i searched buy couldn't find an answer.maybe someone can help me out. my 86 GMC k20 with auto will not start in neutral. the key will not even move physically. why is this?? it's a pain cuz if it stalls when not fully warmed up,i have to come to a complete stop to put it in park to re-start it!

You just have to adjust your shifter so when the tranny is in neutral so is the shifter
