brake and axle questions....New Member
i have a couple of question, which some of you may think thet're kinf od dumb, but this is going to be a new experience for me. I have a 1964 3/4 ton 2wd fleetside long bed. i want to change the wheel bolt pattern form 8 to 5 and convert the fronts to disk brakes.
Now my questions are: I've been looking at different websites for the parts and so far every single one 'ive seen only offers kits for the 1/2ton. will these kits also fit the 3/4 tons or not? if no, why not? as far as the rear goes can i just switch out the axles or do i have to change the whole drivetrain? thanks |

You have to change out the whole rearend. You can use a 71-72 rear end and they are already 5 bolt. If you have leaf and not coil springs you might be able to use a later model rearend but i'm not totaly sure of this.. If you have coil springs then you are better off looking for a 71-72 rear end... They bolt right in..

do only the 71 72 rear ends bolt right up or are there any other rear ends that will fit it.

If he did that to a 3/4 ton then you can do it too.. The 71-72 1/2 tons are the only ones that are 5 lug with coil springs. In 73 they switched to leaf springs.. Also if you switch to a 1/2 ton rear you can put higher gearing in for better freeway speeds.. I forgot to mention that you can probably pick up a whole rearend for less money then to just buy the axles... I got mine at pick and pull for $110...

Yeah, I was also thinking i could get the whole rear end at cheaper price. Now as far as the Front brake kits go, do the kits they sell on LMC truck fit the 3/4 tons? I'm asking this because it specifies that it will only fit the 1/2 tons.

You will have to change out the ball joints for half ton... I used the whole front suspension from a 75 1/2 ton.. Steering box, center link, idler arm, upper and lower control arms. If you do this you have to redrill for the idler arm..

Whats the difference between the 3/4 ton and the 1/2 ton ball joints? Is it alot of trouble fitting the disc brakes on a 3/4 ton?
