Smoking taillights - Write Up
Ok to smoke your taillight lenses or whatever lenses you want is real simple.
Items - VHT Niteshade Pt# SP999 at O'Reilly's ($10.99 a can) 1500 and 2000 grit wet or dry sandpaper Bowl of water and mild soap Patience First off clean off your lenses, after you take them off that is, be sure to use something lint free as lint is the enemy in this mod. Then shoot a coat like so : Then after letting the coat dry (~1hr is what I gave it) it's time to wet sand them, luckily these lenses fit in a good sized bowl so they'll stay wet. Some parts are harder to get then others but a nice even sand will do the trick. Then I let air dry and then cleaned up witha lint free cloth. Pic : After drying, time for coat 2, I relaized after I shot it 2 coats would be all I needed. Now after that coats dries time for clear so it won't flake off. I put 2 coats and here is the finished product : Lighted and new led reverse bulbs : |

I've been doing this for years on a lotta cars. I have my front ones done on the 68 clip on the burb... made them totally disapear in the grill.

nice pic Longhorn! Do you take the 'burb straight to the brewery to get beer? That would be one heck of a beer run!

Re: Smoking taillights - Write Up
Monte... try it first with the reverse lights left alone... it looks 10 times better IMO... esp if the body is a dark color.
As for the beer run... that's right here in columbus. |

Re: Smoking taillights - Write Up
i use that stuff regularly. i did my front ones to hide behind my grill on my 72 but the rears are red as well as the truck so they just look right. i did my honda civic and got pulled over twice, so i sanded it off the red part of the lens and only made the turn signals and reverse part black. i've done about 5 other vehicles with the night shade too. it just doesn't seem to look good without the clear, that's the most important part.

Re: Smoking taillights - Write Up
Doesn't it make it hard for people behind you to see your brake lights?

Re: Smoking taillights - Write Up
No, if you just spray the outside on the lense and not the inside the red on the inside reflects, plus I have led bulbs so it's not hard to see at all.

Re: Smoking taillights - Write Up
Maybe it's already been said but I hafta ask. The red still reflects? If so, how is that? The reason I ask is because in Missouri a vehicle is required to have red reflectors to the rear.

Re: Smoking taillights - Write Up
the red reflectors are a federal law for the record, and technicly, this mod is illegal 50 state wide.
But who cares, so are all those clear lenses and the butt ugly bug eye lookin ones. The light output is reduced, and with every coat you put on, it is reduced more and more. however, the light that comes out is red, and it still reflects red on the reflector part too. |

Re: Smoking taillights - Write Up
I like the looks of the lights in the grill on your Suburban Andy. I think I have an extra set of lenses so I may just have to try that.

Re: Smoking taillights - Write Up
Do you have to wet sand them in between coats?

Re: Smoking taillights - Write Up
My son had them dark like that on his GTI. Black car with super dark tinted windows and tinted lenses...I have to admit it looked pretty darn cool...but the windows and tinted lenses were illegal. I just dont understand why with the costs of tickets and insurance (hard to see brake and tail lights is just asking to get rear ended) would you do this to your rides?

Re: Smoking taillights - Write Up
Doing this is just like buying the pieces of plastic that are already black and putting them on, but since they don't make them for these trucks I made my own.
No problems with cops or anyone nearing rear ending me. Last edited by MonteSS454; 01-13-2009 at 11:23 PM. |
