backwoods garage find!

After helping me wrench on my trucks for the last several years my buddy decided he had to have one of his own. He wanted my C10 but the wife said it wasn't for sale. After searching for only 3 weeks we ran up on this 71C10 in an Alabama garage. This fellow had owned it for the last 25 years and kept it in the garage the entire time! The truck had one repaint in 1995 in the factory colors. This bad boy is arrow straight no waves or dings to be seen! All the moldings look like new, solid corners, rockers and doors. Not even any rust under the battery on the inner or outer fender. It is a V8 truck with no A/C but has power brakes and power steering. The tires on this bad boy still had the tits on them. While the cash was being counted out the old guy just started shaking his head and walked away. I think he was crying cause he wouldn't look at us after the deal was made. As soon as we made it in with it the bugguard, toolbox and bedrails were dumped in the parts pile. The paint looked like it hadn't been shined in quite a while so the buffer was broke out and the afternoon was spent polishing the paint. We also removed what was left of the black paint that went around the grill shell. My buddy cleaned all day and took it to a cruise in Fort Ogelthorpe tonight. Everyone who checked it out seemed to like what he had found. I thought I made some pictures of it at the cruise but apparently I didn't. These pictures were made at the old guys house he bought it from and a couple were made while cruiseing it home. I think we will have a new board member soon! He wants to come with something cool for a prestige plate but he needs some ideas.

Howdy;
Outstanding find! I'm really quite envious. Love it, keep it, drive it. Don't cut it up, "slam" it, bag it, etc. There are plenty of beaters for all that!
Just my 0.02
GREAT truck!

Oh he plans on driving the devil out of it but it wont be cut up. The wood floor conversion is to fix were it has had a few heavy things hauled in the bed a time or two (not to mention just look cool). The drop won't have a notch or bags. He's talking about some new stock height front springs along with a 2.5" drop spindle. Out back we're thinking 5" drop springs should do it. And besides what better to start with than an unmolested rig. I have personaly owned way to many rides that I spent the first months fixing what the PO messed up . I have an old AM pushbutton we might be able to clean up and get in the dash for the old school look. If he goes that route a CD player will be placed in the glovebox for sure. His wife is already on him to give Vintage Air a call. I'm sure you guys will be seeing much more of this old truck!

I will wait and see if he wants that made public knowledge before I post anything. I think he is going to join the board sometime in the next day or so, so he might jump in with the info himself. I will say that the old guy knew what he had and wasn't giving it away. I do feel like a more than fair deal was made and no one walked away feeling like they got hurt. We had looked at a lot of trucks that people wanted considerably more for that weren't near as nice as this one. A deal has already been made to swap out the Enkei rims for some 8" rally wheels and I think a wood floor conversion is in the plans. He wants to replace the headers with something a little better (read that as not old, cheap or leaking ). I haven't done a search yet for headers but does anyone have a thread bookmarked dealing with this. He wants a mid length header so ground clearance wont be a problem (yes a drop will be coming) also he wants top of the line (thick flanges, excellent fit, coated inside and out). Any ideas, suggestions?

Re: backwoods garage find!

As far as headers, I ran full length hooker comps, and they were totally awsome, and were tucked up high enough to hafe never been a problem even with the 500,000 mile old stock front springs. (2 to 3 inch drop)

Consider Sanderson cast iron headers. Sanderson sells them ceramic metallic coated. Less engine compartment heat than tube headers but still provide header performance. Great look, too. High cost, though.
