Tilt column disassembly
Hey everybody, I'm trying to get my tilt column apart so I can make a few repairs and paint it...I am stuck. I have it apart to the point where the turn signal switch is out, the shaft nut is removed and the inner bearing race is out. Now what is my next move? Help.

Re: Tilt column disassembly
I have removed the upper collar on the ones I have done. I started out by taking a little flat screwdriver[ the really small type with the magnet in the end] and kinda "score" around the bottom of the collar where it is pressed on to the shaft knuckle and work the groove. I go around it a couple of times to scrape out the gunk in there and then start gently pry or pulling up at the top. The Chevrolet service manual calls for a puller that hooks into the upper lip to pull it off but good luck finding one of those tools. After scoreing and prying and pulling it usally[the upper collar that is] will work loose and come right off. Be careful and work slowly because that metal is thin and will bend easily. Once the collar is off it is very easy to change the turn signal wsitch.

Re: Tilt column disassembly
Here's the a link that will help. I used the tool in post 16 and made a puller for the collar.
