Found these at the dump today...
I had to haul some cardboard and some other trash to the "transfer station" (or as some of us call "the dump") earlier today (the one in Fremont to anyone who lives in Seattle), and managed to glance in the metal pile near the side of the building where people dump metal pipe, old hot water heaters, and other metal scrap that can't go in the trash.
This is what I found (see attached - took these with my cell phone). Matching doors off what looks like either a '71 or '72 chevy just laying there in the pile. They needed bottoms (they were partially rusted out), but not nearly as bad as I've seen. They were completely salvageable. They still had the glass, the door panels, the vent windows, the chrome, and all of the hardware still in them. The worst part is the morons who work there wouldn't let me take them. Aparently it's against the law - at least that's what they said (I call bullsh!t). They're also not allowed to take them either. The place has cameras and it's an immediate dismissal if they get caught. "sorry dude, they're trash now". I said, "No, they're not trash. They're good doors. When they GET CRUSHED they're trash..." He lost patience with me and told me to take a hike. ...so...I had to just leave them for the crusher. Man, I was pissed. There were also piles of rings and pinions in good shape. What looked like parts to a 3 speed. A complete exhaust system including ceramic coated headers, and some other odds and ends. Looks like someone might have gotten a divorce or something... Anyone want to own-up to this one?

Re: Found these at the dump today...
That's a shame. When I was a kid we would ride bikes to the dump and find all kinds of good stuff (saw my first naked woman at the dump, thanks to Playboy....) Those days are over, the transfer stations are pretty strict.

Re: Found these at the dump today...
He wouldn't even let me pull them out to see them up close. There's no way he was going to be interested in cash. I just didn't get that sense that he was opening the door to an idea like that. Usually you can tell...
I've seen them overreact before when someone's doing something they're not supposed to be doing there. It's a small enough place where you can't do anything unnoticed. Like I said they actually have cameras. One time I saw a couple of black guys try to get away with dumping a BUNCH of paint in the garbage area. There's no hazardous materials dump there except motor oil, but there's no place for paint, coolant, or spray cans. The guys in orange suits came out of the woodwork once someone got wind of it. I think the bulldozer operator spotted them from the pit. The entire operation was shut down for I don't know how long. The people waiting to dump that were caught past the scales were stuck there for a long time. Most of them got out of their vehicles, and walked around. They had guys down in the trash area separating the paint from the rest of the garbage for what seemed to be an eternity. It seems a bit over the top, but the hazardous materials laws are now pretty strict.

Re: Found these at the dump today...
I feel for you and those 71 doors. I have a buddy who worked at the local dump who was the biggest scrounger of all time. He would come home with pressure washers, Honda generators, GM promotional items, AC system testing tools(evacuators, pressure measuring items, etc) and on occassion 67-72 truck parts. He has since transferred to a different job so no more "thrift store" items. The pressure washer would not turn over when you pulled the starter cord. He took the recoil cover off and found a fair size rock between the pulley and the cover. Removed rock and he still uses it today.
The general public can not do this but the bosses looked the other way.

Re: Found these at the dump today...
I was just in Fremont last week. My sister lives in Ballard, and now I completeley exhausted my knowledge of Seattle.
Hey, If you are over that way again, take the Ballard bridge and look to the right as you are coming off the Ballard end of it. Now go inside and see what that guy wants for those 2 old school Broncos sitting out behind the building. Don't forget to ask if he'd liek to deliver them to KY, as I couldn't convince my wife OR my sister to drive them back here for me. Hahahaha

wow, that's a pity that such good stuff goes to the dump. I probably would have just stiff upper lipped them deals into my possession. But that's just me.

Re: Found these at the dump today...
When ever I get in trouble with my parents my dad would always threaten me by saying he would take my truck to dump, but thankfully he never does. What I would do is get me and a buddy, go to that dump with your truck, wear hats and sunglasses so that you're unrecognizable, pretend like your droping some really trash off and run off with those doors.
P.S. - you might also would make it so they don't see your vehicle so you can't be tracked if they call the cops.

Ya'll need to unelect the Nazi's running the west coast! Heck it's a rare trip to the dump around here that you can't haul out more than you brought in.

Re: Found these at the dump today...
Krue, you aren't kidding. I've had it up to my eyeballs with the smoking ban, and now this silly recycling waste ban they have going on.
When you pull up to get weighed at the transfer station there's some woman out there with an orange vest and a clipboard to ask you if you're aware of this ban. Don't dare say no. I did that the first time, and I got the re-education speach I didn't need. Basically there can be NO recyclable materials whatsoever in the trash. When you take your trash out for the garbage man he can go through your garbage, and refuse to pick it up until the "recyclable materials have been removed" as the flier says. He can leave you a nasty-gram, and let your trash pile up for a week until you pick through the garbage and sort everything. Later, the city plans on fining people who don't comply instead of just refusing pick-up. At this rate I'll spend more time sorting my garbage then I will at work. My wife and I do a pretty good job recycling, but how in the hell is the city going to expect garbage guys to go through people's trash? Even if they do do they really plan on fining people? How do they plan on collecting? When are people (besides myself) going to get pissed off enough to tell them to shove it? Funny. When I look in the mirror I don't see a 4-year old. Wonder why the city treats me like one? [rant off]
