Electric drive on a mechanical water pump???
Im looking for a SWP for my BBC when I stumbled across this..
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BBC-A...mZ250272265622 Anyone ever used something like this? I had never heard of it. I realize the added drag on the alternator would negate most of the power saving. But, it would allow me to have the reliability of a mech pump with the advantage of an e-pump (running the pump and the fans between passes with the motor off). I could always carry a belt incase the electric motor died on me. Thoughts?

I ran a setup similar to what your talkin about on a '71 Chevelle street/strip car a few years ago. It worked & cooled good especially for between passes. But, as far as street driving, I only went to town & back (about 30 miles at a time). I've heard the motors don't last to long if you run them alot for extended amounts of time. Just not designed for that kind of duration...street driving alot. But I never had any trouble with mine.
Something you may have thought of... but I would wire the fan & pump seperately. That way you can turn the fans off once get cruising down the road & pump will still be running.

yes i have seen it its kinda old technolegy now tho that they have electricwaterpumps hooked directly to the impeller
its for Drag Racing only tho.

I think summit offers those, or at least did offer them at one time. You might check with them for some more info.

was a hot setup for dragracing 30-40 years ago// might be ok for very limited street use

I used one of those on a small block in the early 90's on a mud racer...same theory, be able to cool the motor between runs with electric fan and pump...no issues, but never used for extended periods of time in my case

Well, it will rarely be driven on the street anyway. Im going for a old-school kind of build (period correct heads, intake, carb, modifications, etc) so I think this would be pretty cool.
Like I said, I'll keep a V belt in the glove box incase it ever dies on me and replacement motors arent too pricey. Thanks guys!

Had one on my BBC with twin electric fans(old fans). went for a cruise and it got hot. Changed stats ...even ran no stat(restricter plate) Replace fans with twin electics from flexalite. Finaly gave up and put the v-grove pulley back on. Problem solved big time. My buddy has same engine and runs a Moroso electric pump. Same problem gets hot. He thought he would run a aluminum rad to compinsate, no go. I found that the electric pumps and the one like your looking at just dont move enough coolant. I went and bought a Edlebrock aluminum pump and found that it works very well.
