Going back to stock gauges.
I'm trying to switch back to original gauges in the dash. The PO put in aftermarket electrical water temp and oil pressure gauges. I've already gone to the junkyard and picked up the metal tubing for the oil pressure gauge so that should be all I need there. Will I need to swicth to a stock water temp sending unit? I know with the fuel gauges we have 30 ohm sending units as apposed to 90 ohm in the later trucks . Is it the same for the water temp gauge?

The sending unit for the temperature gauge is the same if you have the temp light or the gauge. The sending unit was the same for years. should be able to pick one up at your auto parts store.

The factory gauge will likely not read correctly with the sender for an aftermarket gauge. You will need to replace the present sender with one for a factory gauge. The sender for the gauge IS NOT the same as for a light.

The water temp sender is not the same for the gauges as the warning lights...factory gauges = single terminal at the sender...factory warning lights = two terminals at the sending unit. The water temp senders are rated in ohms, so you must have the correct one, in order for the temp gauge to work.

Looked at my manuals, they list a Temperature Sender Switch and a Hot Engine Switch. Two different wires. On my 63 mind you, there's a single Dk. Green wire going to the Temperature Sender Switch Wiring, harness came out of the NOS GM envelope.Connected to the gauges not the light. LILRED66 & raycow are correct, I'm wrong. We have a listing for TS-15 as a temperature sending unit as well as TS-25 from Standard.

Hey guys,
I have done some work on this question since I am trying to make the stock gage work with a late model engine. I don't know the exact year they changed but our trucks use a different "ohm range" sender than the modern ones. The issue I have is that the old senders use a large pipe thread (3/4") while the late model ones use 3/8" or in my case a small metric thread. Here is the ohm measurements from both senders. I haven't figured out how to use the late model senders with the old gage yet. TR

As far as I know this gauge pack has always been in the truck. It's just that the PO put two gauges in the dash beside the radio, oil pressure and water temp.
Please pay no attention to my on the road makeshift oil fill breather retention system (that's a different story).

Drill and tap your existing intake to 3/4" NPT?

That looks like a late model sender.
Our trucks sender uses a 1/2" pipe thread not 3/4" like I said above. It would screw into the manifold directly without the bushing. The late model sensor is 3/8" pipe like yours (or metric). TR

Here is what you need for the oil sender, for use with a warning light cluster, as well as, the water temp sender, for use with a dash cluster with gauges.
1st picture: V8 water temp sender for dash cluster with gauges (single terminal) in factory cast iron intake 2nd picture: V8 water temp sender for dash cluster with gauges (single terminal) in aluminum intake 3rd picture: 6 cylinder water temp sender for dash cluster with gauges (single terminal) in factory cast iron intake 4th picture: 6 cylinder oil sender for dash with warning lights (single terminal) in factory six cylinder block Last edited by LILRED66; 05-31-2010 at 11:16 PM. |

Well it looks like he may have left the gauge wiring intact. So I just have to find the correct connector for the water temp sender in the plug going into the engine compartment once I get the new sending unit. I already connected the oil pressure tubing so that should work (hopefully). Then I just have to disconnect the non-working aftermarket amp meter and put the terminals back on the battery meter, plug it in and that should do it (again, hopefully). I'd also like to find a clock I could put in the gauge pack.

Finally got the truck running again. All the gauges that I switched back to seem to work fine. The battery gauge will be work for another day (my back hurts so I'm done for a few days). Thanks for the help.
