Firewall/engine bay clean up?'s

I was wondering what is the correct steps in to cleaning up engine bay and firewall? I have engine out, front crossmeber,master cylinder and few other things before doing big conversion. I wanna freshing up the area and make it look decent when we open the hood. So any tips on this from you guys like paint to use for master,booster,gear box,firewall,frame,blower motor box etc? all tips/tricks etc ould be greatful!!! Brandon

Hey Brandon!

Why don't you swing over and check out this thread over in the Detailing section of the board. There's tons of information on cleaning up your ride, motor, frame, etc.

Simple Green works pretty good with a pressure washer.

POR-15 makes a product called "Marine Clean". I used it and it degreased everything under the hood when my engine was out., and didn't ruin any paint. It's a spray on hose off type deal. I never had to scrub anything. Only had to scrape the crud off of the crossmember...

Try it... you'll thank me later.

What paint colors do you recomm on booster,master cylinder, and heater box? I plan on painting wheel wells and firewall in a semi black. I tried simple green before and was not impressed. So tell me how you used it with rag toot brush etc? How do you block holes while painting firewall etc?

Yeah well smoothing firewall is out of the question right now! Just trying to clean up/freshing up while do few swap things at this point.

For all the black stuff... I used Duplicolor satin black chassis paint. EZPZ.

Check with Porterbuilt because he offers a weld in kit to fill in the heater box for $99 IIRC.

Wanna save heater box just frshing up paint look some what decent and do it correctly makeover. Here is a pic for you will fill in the hole for clutch and any others that need to be since she is geting a automatic. Brandon

I don't know what look you are going for but, I would sand and prime everything then go with a satin black. It helps hide the imperfections and is easy to touch up. Just an idea. Woody

Should I take heater box off and paint it a different color like some have done? Can I use a 3M Scotch Brite pad and just scuff prime paint till we decided to paint whole truck inside and out? ( EST couple years before we blow entire truck apart). Thanks Brandon

I would leave everything like it is and tape off what you don't want painted. It's and easy way to make it look good without spending alot of money if your planing to do it all again in a year or tow.
