Under Seat Clearance?

Does anyone know how much space there is under the stock bench seat (1963)? I wanna start looking for some stereo equipment to fit under there.

Re: Under Seat Clearance?

I know that my '65 has enough clearance for two amps on the drivers side and a 10 disc changer on the passenger side.

Re: Under Seat Clearance?

I put a 10" sub under the passenger side of my bench seat.
If I recall correctly, I had 8" of height from the carpeted floor to the underside of the '90 seat in my '63.
Greg.

Re: Under Seat Clearance?

I was looking to put a couple of 6X9's under the seat. It looks to be enough room for a lot of options.

A 10 in a sealed box is probably as large as you can fit.

Re: Under Seat Clearance?

Thanks for the help guys. I am considering either 2 square 8"s or a single 10". If there is enough room maybe even 2 10"s. Probably mount some component speakers up under the dash. Not looking to win any competitions, just want to be able to hear it over the motor and exhaust.

Re: Under Seat Clearance?

glad you posted this, as i was curious about the same...i don't plan to do anything fancy, but i'd like to hear some good tunes...just wondering how good the sound will travel being under the seat...wouldn't want it to be too muffled...but under-seat would be my only option for a sub(s) if i go that route, since i plan on keeping the tank behind the seat....i've still got a while to decide since it's not on my priority list right now

Re: Under Seat Clearance?

Here is the system I have in my '65 with the in cab gas tank still in place.

Kenwood KDC-X815 deck mounted in dash.

1 Kenwood 4 channel amp running the speakers
1 Alpine 2 channel amp bridged to the sub.

pair of 6.5" Boston Acoustics
Pair of 6"x9" Polk audios

6.5" 's are mounted in the forward portion of the bottom of the doors
6x9's are mounted in the rear of the doors.
(The doors were cut when I got the truck years ago)

Kenwood and Alpine amps are mounted on the drivers side floor under the seat.
Kenwood cd changer is under the passenger side. I installed velcro strips to the bottom side of the changer and stuck it on a carpeted floor mat and then slide it under the seat. The "gripper spikes" on the floor mat keep it from moving around (I have a full carpet kit that runs under the seat) on the carpet.

The sub is a 6" Bazooka tube standing on end behind the seat next to the tank on the passenger side. Yes it works great, and its invisible being behind the seat.

I am not sure how well speakers would work under the seat though. Luckily my doors were already cut so the placement of speakers was easy.
