Pre-purchase issues (transmission)

So I was looking at an 81 C10 deluxe this weekend and the owner who I kind of know was telling me about this issue he had. its not the reason why hes selling the truck but could be the reason why I don't buy it.. Now i'm not too concerned with repairs no matter how extensive they may be, but the issue is a real head scratcher.

It seems that every time the truck shifts out of first gear into second the engine shuts off. He doesn't know much about the truck, mechanically speaking and at this point I haven't had the truck running or been able to drive it due to a dead battery. I'm plan going back at some point this week to jump the beast and see whats going on but I'm hoping that possibly someone around here can help me figure out this issue before going back.

The truck is all stock 305 but im not sure what trans is in it.. He also said that the choke is all f'ed, dont know if that could be related but its just some extra info..

Thanks,
Rj

Re: Pre-purchase issues (transmission)

Choke not working could cause that.
Or if it has a lockup convertor in the tranny, it's stuck in lock up.
Take some pics!

Yea I'll take some pics when/ if I get it. I have a team of people all working to help me with it. Stupid thing i did, Forgot to look at what transmission is in it. I'm hoping its just a vacuum line and the torque converter lock up or maybe something to do with the choke. To be honest its kind of beyond me...

Re: Pre-purchase issues (transmission)

So I was talking with my old man about this and he was wonding if the vacuum modulator would have anything to do with it. Has anyone else any issues with theirs that would explain this problem? or a lack of vacuum?

Re: Pre-purchase issues (transmission)

Maybe the modulator. Modulator would make it shift way early if it's hooped.
Could be vac hoses hooked up wrong too.
My truck has a turbo 350C. Lock up convertor. Vac hoses were hooked up wrong when I got it and it would shift to lock up right away making it want to quit. The lock up vac supply works from a temp vac switch mounted on the intake.
A non functioning choke could cause a big bog and have it quit too.
Get it warmed up to operating temp when you test drive it.
