started building my 441 heads. tips 4 ya,ll
today I started building my 441 heads and thought I,d share a couple tips I,ve learned over the years.
1. when going to screw in rocker studs and guide plates.. YOU MUST DRILL OUT THE FACTORY OVAL SHAPED HOLES FOR PUSHRODS TO 7/16. USE A NEW DRILL BIT WITH A DRILL PRESS...............AND USE CUTTING OIL GENEROUSLY........ 2. WHEN REMOVING PRESS IN ROCKER ARM STUDS........... HEAT STUD BOSS BEFORE YOU START THE PULLING PROCESS. MORE TO COME BOB

Did not know about those differences. I have a set of 441 heads on my vehicle and would love to see some casting marks that show the id marks.
I can say this, they aint super fast but they have been very durable. |

Re: started building my 441 heads. tips 4 ya,ll
There were two designs of Fuel Injection heads- the ones with 1.94" intake and 1.50" exhaust valves, and the ones with 2.02" intake and 1.60" exhaust valves. On the 2.02/1.60 heads, the valves were extremely close together. These tended to crack in the area between the valves.
I'm guessing you have the 2.02/1.60 heads, Bob?

Re: started building my 441 heads. tips 4 ya,ll
1st thing 441,s arent fuelie heads.............. yes I,am going to large valves. Canada heads have 441 cast into them on bottom side length wise on int. port, us heads have 441 cast in width wise. there heavy castings. people say go modern alum heads but what they overlook is all the cheap import heads need work b4 install so true cost is a lot higher. nothing is better imo than gm for our use. lastly when folk say closed chamber is better by the time you open chamber up so int valve can breath its not 64cc chamber anymore. go 76cc and use .125 dome pistons to get 10-1, fine tune with deck height and gasket thickness. IMO I,AM NOT BUILDING A RACE ENG. JUST A REAL 355 / 350HP ENG.

Re: started building my 441 heads. tips 4 ya,ll
If your new heads are the 170cc intake port volume S/R heads, THOSE are awesome heads. They actually have more port volume than your 441's do. I have a set I plan to use on a SBC 400 some day.
Remember when looking at ports, it's not the size that's most important, it's the shape!!! I seldom hear on this board about them, it's all about Vortec's or aftermarket stuff. The 441's are great heads, the S/R's are even better!!! |
