Polishing a turd...or Project It Just Needed a Clutch!

As some of the old timers know, I've had a 72 GMC K2500 yard plow for years. It faithfully started and performed its chores when asked. Most of the time it sat, waiting for the next job, mostly untouched unless something broke down.

Well, the clutch went out in it lat February so I hauled it in the garage a couple months ago. One thing lead to another. Might as well do axles, suspension, and brakes. Might as well fix the cab. Heck I've always wanted to put that 292 in it. Well I have some spare 67 fenders and a 68 GMC nose. Guess I should paint it...

Anyway, here is how it had looked for years

Its a function of time versus reward or gain = I'm lazy

My goal was to keep it a work truck so I did not go out of my way on the details. Mechanically its sound and it is all one color. Still has dents and dings, I don't want to be afraid to use it.

CG, no other threads, this has gone on only since May. As for the bed, I have an AZ bed that (you guessed it) has dents and dings, but is otherwise super solid. I'll have the nicest turd on the block.

good thing it was only a clutch problem, think what it would have cost if it were something serious. you were lucky.

My kind of build, not a show truck but sure looks good going down the street. You will not have to cry over a few dents and scratchs but will get as many good coments as the high dollar trucks.

Nice job CPNE. Keep going. Too bad you didn't put a V6 in there.

Re: Polishing a turd...or Project It Just Needed a Clutch!

Thanks. The pics make it look better than it really is. I just remounted the plow frame and hooked up the hydraulics, so yes, it still has that chore. But now I can take it to town without fear of someone getting lock jaw from being cut on rusty metal.

Erl, your truck is still one of my favorites. No 305 V6's to be had, but I did have a pair of 2500 V6 GMC fender badges I put on it, even though mine are in a row.

Re: Polishing a turd...or Project It Just Needed a Clutch!

No offence, but why do you want a straight 6? Is it better for a plow truck? or does it just happen to be a good running motor, and your 350 wasnt?

I had a 76 nova with a 250 I6 one time, and it ran good, but the worst 350 Ive ever had was better than the I6 in that nova, lol.
