Help on wheel color for steel with Dog Dish
So we are finally in paint after a two year resto. My painter does not like white for the wheels, and after a lot of searching for the answer on this site, I think I need to use a "lifeline".
Here is the truck being painted Medium olive and Dark olive (original scheme according to SPID). Sorry for the sideways shot. I have 8 lug 16 inch steelies and have just repainted the dog dishes. I know some of you will say this is a personal decision, but I have spent enough time on this site to know that you guys have great perspective. Can I get votes for White, Dark Olive, Medium Olive, Black or Argent Silver. Thanks! Truck when I bought it. |

Re: Help on wheel color for steel with Dog Dish
I love the thoughts. I was dead set on white and my guys at the shop (good friends) are saying there is no white elsewhere and it would not look right. All you have to do is look at Sicklajoie's rig to see how great that white looks. Keep the comments coming please. BTW, my family is all set on Dark Olive. The reality is if I don't like what we do I can try some beauty rings or just rip them off and repaint.

Re: Help on wheel color for steel with Dog Dish
Huh? This thread confuses me. First of all,who cares what your painter says? Do what you like. Second, your truck is two-tone Dark Olive Poly and White, right? The quite above states the painter's reasoning is based on no other white on the truck? Third is,GM built the best looking trucks ever made and obviously made the right choices from top to bottom. Do what they did and you can't go wrong. Fourth, everything about your truck is stick,so why go screwing with just a different color wheel? Paint them white.

Re: Help on wheel color for steel with Dog Dish
IMO with you doing a dark olive/medium olive two tone, having green wheels would be way too much green. Having a contrasting color like white or silver will really make things pop.
Eventually if I get some extra $$$ I'd like to ditch the tonneau cover (which would require me to repaint the top of the bedcaps where the paint's worn off) and I'd like to paint the top white to break things up a little bit more.

Re: Help on wheel color for steel with Dog Dish
I think silver would look good...but you can't go wrong with white.
I have never seen a two tone medium olive/dark olive truck...cant wait to see it done.

Another vote for white. I think any color green on the wheels would be a little much (personal opinion).

Who cares what your painter thinks!
It's your truck! Having said that, I also say go with the white! Of course, I might be a little bias! Keith |

Re: Help on wheel color for steel with Dog Dish
Hi Rou, because of the creamy medium olive i suggest a slight off white that i use a lot is called canvas white. I can best describe it as a little almond mixed in. I doesn't look cheap to me like some off whites as i feel it looks rich. Paint one wheel with this from rustoleum. You wont be out much. Good luck, Brian F.

Either go stock white or if you want something else, the lighter green.

Re: Help on wheel color for steel with Dog Dish
Tim, I believe he was saying that when he bought the truck the med olive top and middle had been repainted white. He has now restored the truck to the original two-toned med and dark olive. Then mentioned to his painter that he wanted the wheels white and the painter said "why, there's no other white on the truck, It will look funny."

Although the Medium Olive would look good,it just gives a "wrong way" or old feller got a hold of some paint look,IMO. I dunno,it's just me. I had a Medium Olive truck I painted the wheels Rallye wheel Silver on and it looks great...and as if it was factory...unless you knew better ('69s had silver wheels). For the sake of argument, that might be a great compromise. Here's the ole work truck. Not the same deal, but gives an idea how silver works w/Medium Olive Poly

Re: Help on wheel color for steel with Dog Dish
in case you're still wondering... here's the color combo with white wheels (I realize the med and dark are reversed from your truck in the first pic (Pete's truck I think, LOVE that truck!), but you get the idea). Glad you chose white! Tim, I was stumped too - I was certain the truck was white/dk olive in the 1st picture, ha.
