New member with project truck
Hi everybody, I am a new member. I live in Newberg, Oregon on a small farm. I just bought a 1968 Chevy C30 1-ton dually flatbed with a 327 V-8 from a local farmer. I have already started browsing old threads to resolve my headlight switch problem and am sure I will be visiting every day to find old answers to my new questions. Thanks in advance for those! This is a great resource!
It's immediate needs are: 1) Fix rear brake leak. There's a leak just behind the master cylinder. 2) Fix headlight switch. Running lights work, new headlight doesn't, so problem likely is in the switch. 3) Rebuild carburetor. Is balky to start and idles rough until warm. 4) Remove old bed rusted hardware and install new bed wood. 5) Find a source for removable box enclosures for it. (12 foot long bed) Help? I have edited in two pix to show the truck and engine. -Paul Last edited by 68C30Flatbed; 09-08-2004 at 07:02 PM. |

Welcome. On the headlights, check your dimmer switch.
Is this a 133 inch wheelbase or 157 inch? Duallies are cool, here's mine, a 67 (with 69 nose)

Finally: Here's some pix of the wiring fix and the interior (with my gopher killer Ruger 10/22). I bought an angle grinder, a remanufactured master brake cylinder ($22 with core rebate), and a carburetor rebuild kit. My weekend will be full.
Yes, and thanks CPNE for the original tip about the dimmer switch. Last edited by 68C30Flatbed; 09-08-2004 at 07:05 PM. |

Wheelbase? Uh ... 157, I think. I left the spec sheet at home, and haven't memorized every particular ... yet.

Thanks for the welcomes. I will take pix this weekend and post them. It is painted 'Dark Green', but now has faded and rusted. It has a rusted metal plate on the back third of the bed that has been tack welded on. I'll have to Dremel/chisel that loose so I can replace the wood. You'll see, it's not Ugly . . . I would call it beauty-challenged.

Welcome, and on your headlight deal, have you tried messing with the dimmer switch on the floor yet? That's a common problem with these trucks, the switches get corroded and nasty on the floor. You can try moving the connector around on the switch, and if that doesn't work, you can run a jumper between the three wires (2 wires at a time, I'd tell you which ones to jump, but can't remember), and see if you get headlights.
Either way, welcome, and I'm looking forward to seeing pics!!

No, I haven't messed with the dimmer switch on the floor yet. I have been searching for the message talking about that all morning. Thanks for the instructions!

Welcome to the board from Central Ohio...one ton trucks are awsome...onless on a bumpy inner city street and have no load in the back.
Chances are, if you have a 12 foot long bed...you have a 157 in wheel base chassis. |
