4x4 gear shifter position

i just bought a 1971 c10 4x4. what position does the 4x4 shifter need to be in (hi, low, neutral, etc.) when doing normal driving? also what position does it need to be in if going off road (snow)? truck is automatic.

2 Hi for normal driving
4 Hi for snow -not on dry pavement-
4 Low to get out of places 4 Hi got you into.

Always save 4 low for when you think you have a chance to get out by yourself.

Actually, when you need some extra grunt for say pulling houses off their foundations, and you have good traction where you don't need 4wd, 4 Low reduces your final drive ratio to where you can really pull. You can leave the front hubs unlocked and simply multiply your tourque with the transfer case.
