searching through the posts, and most threads are about swapping door panels out, and some about cloth covering for door panels....

has anybody tried a sealer or something for the 1972 panels?

mine look okay, but the top layer has gone soft, and if I hit it with a fingernail or hard object, it gouges a little, and removes some of the plastic...

for the time being, I'd like a way to seal it up if possible to stop the degradation. (if it's not too far down that path already...)

thoughts?

I washed mine down good with laquer thinner and a real stiff plastic brush - they were getting "pebbley" - then I used a kylon plastic paint that just so happened to match my parchment interior perfectly. I'd rate them as 3 footers.

I would give the panel a coat of expoxy resin....( available at boat suply dealers and most of the larger hardware stores).. and probably the less expensive polyester resin would work very well also... Hardener is required with both products

The resin will ad stiffness to the panel and will be an excellent sealer for top coat of fabric, paint or whatever your desire...Jim

I did it about a month ago - I'll post some pics so you can see what it looks like using paint. Not to jump over the thread but just to show one alternative.
I wanted to match the door panels and handles to the belts, visors and headliner - I used Krylon "antique white" - it was the same yellowish color of all my parchment stuff. (I'll confirm the krylon brand tonight)
First pic shows all the parts and the difference between door panels and the rest of the parchment stuff. The second pic, the color to match. A good cleaning, wipe down with laquer thinner and light even coats makes them nice. I make all attempts to not get in with greasy hands or dirty clothes so as to not prematurely wear out the paint. If I do, I'm out 6 bucks for paint and the time.

I would almost bet that it is Krylon Plastic Fusion.I haven't used it but have heard several people swear by it.

Parchment panels are the worst at oxidizing and getting soft. Mine below were the same. The guy who restored them lightly beadblast them to remove the loose stuff then paints them. . You loose some of the grain in the plastic but not too much if they are'nt too bad bad to start with. It is still better to remove the loose plastic than to just paint over it.

well, keeping with the $6 I mentioned - turns out I was wrong about the paint it's actually plasti-kote - T-27 Antique White. The part number is on a bar code sticker on the can with the name - the number is 0 71915 00127 7. (I'd imagine the first 0 and last 7 get dropped) It's definately not show truck type stuff but it looks good to me.

I'm thinking of doing the dash pad next - it's similiar to the arm rests and they came out pretty cool. I know I should do black and do my column black but as everyone says, "It's mine so I'm doin' what I want to do"

If I get home decent tonight, I'll take a pic of the panels in the truck...
