Do Your Kids Ride?

Getting ready to launch my 67 today! After a thorough shake down and some good 3 point belts I may have my 3yo ride with me sometimes. I know what we did as kids growing up, hell some of my best memories were sittin in the bed of a pickup, but times have changed. I plan to be as safe as possible. Who lets their kids ride with them in old pickups? Who wouldn't allow it and why?

Re: Do Your Kids Ride?

My daughter I raised by myself, rode in the middle of my '65 Fleetside, in one of those car seats that wasn't attached to anything. It had two "legs" that slipped between the cushion and the back. Compared to what we have to day, she was not safe. Compared to what we had then, she was safer than me, but not by much. Times indeed have changed.

If the car seat is properly restrained and is an approved seat, you child should be better off than you are. Let's hope you don't have to find out the hard way. If the cops in your area sign off on it, you should be good-to-go. The fellowship is the key...take a kid to a car show!

Re: Do Your Kids Ride?

Both of my kids were brought home from the hospital in our 72 suburban and have spent the last 6 and 4 years riding in old trucks. I feel they are just as safe riding in a older truck as they would be riding in a later vehicle.

Re: Do Your Kids Ride?

My son will be 2 at the end of September. He rides in my truck daily. His car seat is secured by the lap belt and is very snug.My brother and I grew up riding in my Dad's 53 five window truck and never had a car seat but we always wore our lap belts.I feel my son is very safe riding in my truck.Strap your 3 yr old in and enjoy the big smile on his/her face when yall go for a ride in Daddy's truck.

Re: Do Your Kids Ride?

She'll probably ride with me mostly to cruise nights. I'd like to imerse her into the car world so that she won't grow up thinkin that cool cars only come from a dealership (Daddy is gonna have to foot the bill). Im concentrating on safety and reliability before all else and I feel she will be perfectly safe. I think its pitiful that I even have to ask that but the world slowly changes. A certain person who's chromosomes don't exactly match mine voiced a concern and made me think too hard.

I see where your coming from but believe me my wife is a pre-k teacher she fusses all the time about kids being picked up and dropped off not properly secured. But she won't hesitate to ride a kid in my or her old truck.

Re: Do Your Kids Ride?

As long as you use a proper carseat and mount it correctly there's no reason not to let a kid "Live Large".The only caution I have is that at todays speed the,"Upper limb, manually applied, kid restraint system"(Dad's fast arm)is not an option.

Re: Do Your Kids Ride?

Talked to an officer today and he said that as long as the child is properly restrained he has no enforcement against. He said "If it was your only transportation I could tell you to buy a new car, could I?" "Not yet", I replied.

Re: Do Your Kids Ride?

My 4 year old daughter loves to ride in "The Fast Truck" as she calls it. I would not risk the safety of my sweet little angel and I see no problem with her riding in my '70 - She sits in a secured car seat.
I remeber standing up in the front seat of my parents car when I was her age, now that was unsafe

My granddaughter loves to ride in Grandpas big green truck. One day she told me it was fun riding in the truck and I asked her why. She told me it was because its the only time she's ever been allowed to ride in the front seat.

Re: Do Your Kids Ride?

my 7 year old daughter would rather ride in the 71 more than my daily driver. besides its all in the parent and how responsible of a driver you are with your kids in the vehicle that depends on how safe they will be.
