engile oil, what do you run + additives
so I am about to change the oil in my motor and since it is the first or second change from the build( not sure what previous owner did) what do you all recommend for oil, weight to brand and do any of you guys run any additives and if so which ones and why... Since I didn't build or breakin the motor, I need to make a choice as to what to run in it...... so let me know what you run and why...... I come from a long line of diesel engines and a mild built v8 is new territory for me...
O, and how many quarts will a 350 hold with stock pan....

It's been some time since mine ran (it's on a stand in the garage). But, with the heat that we have here (around 100-110), I'd run a 20W40. Then, there are those who will tell you a 10W30 or 10W40. But, I'm old school and would probably just run a good 30W. Additives? Why? Some would knock off a quart and throw in a qt of Risolone. Additives are already in the good oils. One thing you might consider would be an oil that contains some zinc. Don't know which one's they are, but someone will let you know. It's one of those debatable topics.

Run a oil with enough zinc content if you have a flat tappet cam!
Synthetic or non, im currently running the non synthetic vr1 racing oil by valvoline, its not in tickers FAQ but it says for flat tappet cams on the back. And it was cheap and I didnt wanna go with $10 synthetic right away.

Amsoil.. to me it is the best. it is expensive. But most racing teams use it, its great for diesels. Here is some specs on the 10w40 synthetic.

was kinda sure but wanted to be 1005 sure.... ADHD sorry.... so just to pick a weight and brand... I do run rotella t6 in my d-max.... so maybe I will try the rottela conventional oil...

well I know all about amsoil, I run it in my 500hp dmax and ran it in my twin turbo cummins at 650hp...but I want to stay cheaper but good. so with my cam and rollers I should run what oil... oldblue, is vr1 a good one for me

I've just started using Joe Gibbs break in oil in my engine builds. Rotella 15w40 afterwards with a little addditive, but I'm gonna try the other Joe Gibbs stuff. We'll see how it works..

I can't offer advice on any specific brands. However, if you don't need anything with a higher viscosity than Xw-30 than don't use it.
With modern multi-viscosity oils, there really is no need to switch viscosities from season to season. I use 10w-30 year round and am considering switching to 5w-40 because my engine produces good oil pressure when cold, but when it's warmed up the gauge almost reads nothing at idle. I also have a couple cylinders burning oil so consumption is high. (I have no money for a rebuild, and I put less than 3,000 a miles a year on it anyway...) |

here is the cam I am running...... howards cam cl11025 hydraulic roller cam and lifter kit.. its a roller tappet cam with roller lifters..so i g so do I guess it qualifies as roller right.... do i need an additive

That is a roller cam. You do not need any special additive like a flat tappet cam would require. If you are really concerned about it you can contact the cam manufacturer for their recommendation or try to get in touch with the shop that built the motor. I wouldn't spend much time on it though. Any quality oil will be fine.

thanks fro all the input guys... it did help alot.... oil is changed to rotella 15-40 and new filter. called the builder and he said I should be good to go by his account...he said they added a breakin oil when it left the shop and what ever the previous owner did after that with oil changes he can't say.... so I get his point.... but at least I am on the right track now
