Crap...I broke my engine.

OK guys, this morning I was installing the new quadrajet I modified and over hauled on the '80. Everything was going great it fired right up and idled cold after 3 or 4 cranks. So I started to adjust the fast idle cam and then I goosed the throttle so it would step down. When I did that, I heard a clatter and white smoke starting pouring out of the pass. side exhaust. Now it has a contstant knock and believe I may have dropped something in the intake when I was putting the new carb on and it made it's way to one of the cylinders. I have not pulled anything apart because I was so pissed I had to take a break.

My question to you guys: Should I pull it apart and replace the components I destroyed (mind you the engine is already tired) or should I go with a crate motor?

Thanks. Here is a pic of the quadrajet I modified (on the inside that is)...

Re: Crap...I broke my engine.

that stinks man... if the motor isnt severely broke when you tear it apart rebuild it. but if you are wanting a crate motor get one..

i did the same thing a few years back on a 327 but i had dropped a cigarette into the motor and it made it out of the motor burnt in no time.. i got very lucky.

Man that sucks. Ya its probably bouncing around like a pin ball in there as it was throwing a scrap iron fit. Ya best way to go now days is crate engine, warranty and all.

Re: Crap...I broke my engine.

OK so I bought the crate motor today off Jegs. It was $1500 and some change, not bad. This is my daily driver so I wasn't worried about a lot of horsepower. Although I was surprised to find that it was 290 horse and 326 ft. lbs.! That's cool, I thought it was going to be one of those 185 horse motors. So that'll be enough to get me around.

I'll post pics, hopefully this weekend, when I put it....

Here is a before pic of the engine and one of the truck itself.

Re: Crap...I broke my engine.

I love your truck. Sorry about your motor, I would upgrade from the manifolds to headers(unless you like manifolds.

Re: Crap...I broke my engine.

You don't mess around! Sorry to hear about your incident. When my '62 belonged to my brother, he did the same thing you did. Dropped something down the intake doing a carb swap on a 350hp 327. Fired it up and killed it. Good luck on your engine swap...Carb looks killer BTW.
