inner fender bolt
I need to drop my inner fender to change out my heater core. All the bolts were kind of rusted in place. PB blaster seems to have taken care of all but one of them. It's on the very top so I have a feeling it just isn't getting into the threads. It actually broke loose, but I can only get it out a couple of turns before it gets tight again. Does anyone have any good tricks? Thanks!

Re: inner fender bolt
Just keep working it back and forth, be patient. Try to hit it with some lube, PB is good stuff. Take your time

Re: inner fender bolt
if you can put a little heat on it, that will help.....Loctite makes a product called "Freeze Release" you'd be surprised just how good this stuff works! I keep a couple of cans of it at my work just for frozen bolts!
Hope this helps! Ben |

Re: inner fender bolt
Thanks, I kinda thought I just needed to take my time. I have been doing the spray, wait , turn thing for about a week. I will try and locate the freeze and release, I have heard it's good stuff but have never seen it locally. I could try and heat it with a torch, but the inner fender has some kind of rubberized undercoating.

Re: inner fender bolt
Those bolts are held by a capture nut and will rust/bend and then turn forever without coming off , Carefully grind the bolt head off and you'll be done in minutes . On reinstall do not reuse the capture nuts/bolts buy new they are pretty much a 1 use item and use never sieze lube on install to avoid this problem again .

Re: inner fender bolt
When helping a friend on his 68, he held a pair of channel locks on the nut while I turned the bolt. It still wasn't easy but in time it came loose...ed...

Re: inner fender bolt
Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll be ordering some capture nuts! I don't believe the existing one is broken as the bolts has a few degrees of free play when going from tightening to loosening. If I get the bolt out far enough I may just grab the dremel tool. I would hold the nut from the top but it's hidden inside the fender and not accessible.

Re: inner fender bolt
Well, the capture nut finally broke today after trying one of those freeze off bolt sprays .Oh well, I guess it's time to pull out the dremel and cut off wheel.
