Re: Wood Bed in '72 GMC Jimmy
Did you remove the steel floor? I can see the wheeltubs are mounted on top of the wood floor. Did you use some kind of sealant between the wood and the wheeltubs?

Re: Wood Bed in '72 GMC Jimmy
Yeah I took out the steel in 5" sections, what a PITA! I redesigned a lot to get it to fit so I could mount the wheelhouses on top. The last crossmember is out of a '73 and up because it has a ledge on it that just happens to be the same thickness of the wood, I wanted steel at the end of the bed for wear purposes. The first crossmember, after the step, is out of a truck, we had to notch it to put a body mount in it! Jim
Yes, I used dum-dum under all the wood where the steel meets it

Re: Wood Bed in '72 GMC Jimmy
I'm afraid my steel floor wasn't in that good of shape, ended up replacing all crossmembers, I'm working on the last one now. It's the thick one that holds your seat belts and goes between the wheelhouses. Jim

As for the wheel houses, I thought I would have to section them, but I didn't. On the inner fender it has a crease that I had to bend around. I made a slice at the proper height and rebent the flange on the wheel house, and slotted the mounting screw holes, The hard part was in the front corners, I had to route them out, about a 1/2 day on each one. It does look original, as I to am a fanatic about originality. Sorry but I can't bring it to Slatington this weekend, I just couldn't get it done in time! Thanks for the compliments Jim

Re: Wood Bed in '72 GMC Jimmy
It was Herculiner, real old can, I couln't get all the particles in suspension, so I did 2 coats. Once you put the lid back on the can that's it, it solidifies in the can, no reusing it! Pretty tough stuff, I'll let you know how it holds up. I thought you guys would be tired of seeing pics. It might take awhile, as I just got the camera last night and I'm not to good at it, some of the pics are large. Thanks for the comps. Jim

Re: Wood Bed in '72 GMC Jimmy
Would look good all exposed, brings your eye to the interior. My mistake was cutting the boards separately, if I did it again I would measure and cut them all to same lenght, you can't see it, but I know its there. Oh well, everyone has 20/20 hindsight! Jim

Re: Wood Bed in '72 GMC Jimmy
That is really nice! I thought about doing the same thing, but my steel floor is so nice, I decided not to. How about doing a FAQ on it so Krue can post it? Thanks, Jeff.

Maybe you could post up some pics, I am not aware of what a sub. floor looks like. Is it just a longer blazer floor with more crossmembers? Any help on what it looks like would be great! Jim

Re: Wood Bed in '72 GMC Jimmy
Alright let me start this here FAQ by giving some background. There is no kit out there that fits exactly, so I recommend going to a manufactor (spelling?) that will let you pick what you want. Example: I needed more of the splined carriage bolts, I was told at Classic Ind. that I had to buy the entire bolt kit again, hogwash!
I called Bruce Horkey, I'll check on the name, and he asked what I wanted, I told him and he sent out the count that I wanted, so be careful where you buy the pcs. The wood I ordered was for a longbed, thinking I would have to adjust the lenght, and I am glad I did. As it turns out you have to flip the wood with the cutout in it to the other side to get the lenght right. Also there are 2 long and 2 short pcs. for the outside corners, I ended up ordering 2 more long pcs. All the wood has to be cut to lenght by 3-4". I recommend cutting all at the same time, as mine are a little off, I should have done this. BTW get your wood without any predrilled holes, you will have to adjust them. The end of the wood at the tailgate was cut at a 6-7 degree angle, tell you why later. The same goes with the SS strips, I had to flip the SS strips to the other end of the bed from where they were designed to go and add holes where needed, also get 2 extra of the long ones. Center punch your holes well and step the size of the hole up till you get to 1/4". 2-3 drill sizes should do it. The lenghts of SS were cut with a 4 1/2 inch wheel on an angle grinder, I tried a chop saw, but it seemed to get the metel to hot and blue the edges The other thing you will need to adjust are the wheelhouses. They are rather easy to fix so I'll get into that when the time comes. OK that seems like a basic overview, but remember this: Read, Understand and follow all the directions on your power tools. There is not a better safety tool then these, SAFETY GLASSES, wear them!!! I"ve had 2 pcs. of metal ground out of my eye and it defiantly ruins all the fun you can have working on your truck. You stop working very quickly when you get something in your eye. Thanks Jonathon for all your help!!! Pics. to follow with more info.

Re: Wood Bed in '72 GMC Jimmy
A FAQ is a "how to" thread telling (w/pics preferred of course ) how you did the floor. Post it on the FAQ Submissions board, then everyone else who wants to do this will profit from your experience.

Re: Wood Bed in '72 GMC Jimmy
So is there any help with this "FAQ" or am I on my own. Do you post it up like a thread? Any further questions, who do I address them to. Sounds like work, do people really want this information? Jim
PS Am I allowed to use company names of my suppliers?
