Metering Rod Spring Kit for Carter AFB
I have a Carter AFB 500 cfm carb on my 250. It's running a bit too rich. Is there anyway to change the jets on a Carter or do I need to get a metering rod spring kit and use trial and error until I get a good match for this engine?
The metering rod spring kit is found at Summit Racing http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...rchType%3DBoth but I've never done this before. Is there anything else I should do to lean the carb down? Thanks.

I wouldn't think you need to change the springs unless you are running a big cam that reduces the vacuum. If it is just running rich you might can fix that just by changing the metering rods without taking the top off the carb. I see you are in Starkville, went thru there last weekend for the bike rally in Sturgis.

Carter AFB's are such a sinch to change metering rods, if you have 5 minutes, you can lean that bad boy down. So simple it is scary.

Do I have to take the top off the carb to get to the metering rods? I'm sure this is a stupid questions. Also, any size recommendations?

On the top of the carb there are 2 small plates held with 1 tiny screw for each. Remove the screw and plate and pull the metering rod out.
For fine tuning, a different spring will work. For more fo a change, a different rod can be used. To make a major change, the jets may need to be swapped. I bought one of the strip kits from Summit and you'll be lucky if you use 2 pieces out of the whole thing but... This kit contains an assortment of metering rods and jets only. No springs. In most cases, the springs or rods will do the trick.

Tech Tip: DO NOT remove the screws when changing metering rods. They are way too easy to drop into the carb. Loosen them just enought to spin the little plates out of the way.
