Fuel Gage ?
My fuel gauge reads 1/4 all the time. The sending unit is good. When I remove the wire on the sender the gauge goes to full, when I put it back on it goes to 1/4.
HELP Any Ideas????

I'm fighting with mine right now and it had the same symptoms. My sending unit was bad though. I hooked another sending unit up outside the tank and grounded it. It worked perfect so I determined that my old one was toast. I removed the old one from the tank and saw why (rust). I put the other one in the tank and the gage works perfect. I now have a fuel line issue....I think someone dropped a six cylinder unit in my tank at one time.

It sounds like you still have a problem with your sending unit. The sending unit should read 0 to 90 ohms, (0 = empty, 90 = full).
Not knowing how much gas you have, a leak in the float can cause low readings when your tank is 1/4 or more full. Jim |

If the tank or sending unit were not grounded, the gauge would read full at all times.
Are you saying that you checked the tank unit, moved it through its range and it reads 0 ohms when the float is all the way down and 90 ohms when the float is all the way up? What happens if you ground the sending unit wire? Gauge should read empty. Jim |

I have not tried that(grounding the sender wire). If it doesnt read empty???? Guess I'll retest my sender. Last I had it out the ohms read fine.

I'd check out the wire. I had a problem with a fuel guage quite a few years back and it was the wire itself. It had been spliced but not soldered.

If the needle stays on one spot on the guage, then there is a strong chance that your guage is not getting power to it. (not the ground side...12 volts)
Pull the insterment panel, and look at the circuit card on the back. Follow the lines from the posts on the back of the fuel guage to where they go to the plug. You are looking for an open or break in the line. |

Be willing to bet it is the resistor on back of your gauge. Remove it from gauge and check it with your ohm meter-no reading =bad. Just fixed one in a 72 a couple of weeks ago that reading just like yours-1/4 no matter how full it was.
