Skip White HEI

So, I'm starting to look around for an HEI distributor for my 250 engine. It looks like I can get a used stock one from the junkyard for $15 - $20. Or, I can get a new Skip White one delivered for about $80. Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Skip White HEI

I bought the ProComp SBC 210cc Aluminum Heads and the new HEI Distributor. They both work really well (Although Chinese). The engine they went on is a 385 Stroker that so far is the badest engine I've built in 30 years. I'll buy them again.

Re: Skip White HEI

Yeah I bought the ProComp 210cc heads as well.

But a buddy of mine cornered me and ended up selling them to him before I could them.

Skip has some great part and customer support.

In fact, I told them they didn't ship the head bolt I ordered. So w/o any fuss shipped them out to me no problem!

Re: Skip White HEI

i have one in my big block and the vac advance popped... otherwise, no problem what so ever.
I have never heard that they made them for inlines, and the OP was asking for inline pieces. I just wanted to make 100% sure we were giving him good advice.

Re: Skip White HEI

I just put one in my truck this week. Replaced a GM unit that had the inner wire fail. Runs VERY smoothly now. :-)

Re: Skip White HEI

****IMPORTANT FOR 4x4 OWNERS****

The Skip White distributor will not fit on 4x4s without modification of the top cover.

The new dizzy went in fairly easily but when I went to put the top cap on I realized that there was no way it was going to fit. It's just too tall and bangs into the firewall at the top as it curves in above the back of the motor. This is a HUGE problem because the top cap is secured by 4 screws that also secure the coil and the coil ground. On the stock cap the coil is held down by 4 separate screws and then the top cap has it's own 2 screws so it can run without the top cap. Not so with the Skip White.

I trimmed an inch or so off one side of the cap and got it to fit but it was still very hard to tighten the screws because of the curve of the firewall. In the end I just reused the stock coil mounting screws and top cap with the new distributor. All the screw holes and mounts in the aftermarket cap were the same as the GM unit.

If you are replacing a GM HEI you can reuse the top cap but if you're upgrading to HEI you will need to trim the top cap and also have some very low profile phillips screwdrivers on hand to tighten the cover/coil.
