Re-dying console - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a console that I want to clean up and use in my suburban, but the console was painted white with some kind of paint and not a dye. What would be the best way to remove the paint without messing up the console? Any help would be appreciated.

I used a light sandpaper on mine, but it wasn't chipping real bad or anything. I just painted mine with vinyl and plastic spray paint...am I going to regret that? I thought these consoles were just fiberglass or some sort of plastic? Here is a pic of mine...I am also redoing one with cupholders, so I would like to know what kind of dye you plan on using Kingparts, so I can try dye this time around. Not trying to steal your thread, just adding my 2 cents

I am going to use the SEM brand of dye. It is in a aerosol can and does a great job. I have used it before and it seems to soak in to the parts rather than just covering it up. Did the sand paper leave marks? I wanted to see the grain in the console.

Maybe this pic shows the grain better. I don't think it left marks at all. The grain is a little less noticable, but only REAL close up- Maybe some paint remover that won't hurt the plastic would be okay? Also on that SEM do you just spray it on??

Yes it is a spray. Just take your time and clean what you are dying really good. I spray a light coat then let it dry and spray another. Works and looks great for a long time.

Junkyardjohn- That is the exact stuff I used the first time. I think it worked great too, but I haven't put my console in yet to see how it holds up...also is there a certain bracket that is needed to put in one of these consoles in a blazer as compared to a truck? I have heard they need a mounting bracket?? Maybe that is 73 and up or something?

I glass bead blasted mine...works great...you just need to hold the nozzle further away than you would with metal. The material it is made of is something similar to fiberglass so I don't you gain much by using dye. I painted it with automotive paint and clearcoated it with satin clear...looks great 2 years and no problems

I'll give a suggestion. I have used EZ-Off oven cleaner to remove paint from plastic (car models, slot cars, sizzlers, etc.) for years. Doesn't touch the plastic at all. Sometimes it takes patience and some scrubbing, saved lots of old collectibles.

Also removes anodizing from aluminum.
