Tuning BBC for AZ EMISSIONS?
The dreaded trip to the emissions station! My experience with tuning vehicles to take through emissions hasn't been a good one, I've learned that adjusting and tweaking a motor to run it's very best isn't always always the best way to go! I've got the basics down, change the oil, plugs, cap & rotor and air filter but I need help when It comes to timing and carburetor adjustments to pass emissions! I'm assuming making it run hot and as lean as possible is the way to go, anyone know how to tune a stock mid 70's 454 with an Edelbrock 1407 and HEI distributer?

if you go to lean then the nox goes up and you fail at least where i am in mass. you should be able to lean it out some and i have heard about giving the timeing a few more degress will help. never done it so i do not know if that will work

Re: Tuning BBC for AZ EMISSIONS?
go talk to mike kelly at lopers on 9street and indian school.
he has a dyno and will tune your truck to pass emissions, then he will tune it after wards to make it run correctly for the rest of the year, you will gain power, and MPGs with the correct jets/timing/heat range spark plugs. trust me, its worth it. i do it every year with all my toys. i cant tell you a price, becuase he gives me a "good deal" because ive been going to him for almost 20 years now. tell him jamie from afghanistan told you to talk to him. |

Re: Tuning BBC for AZ EMISSIONS?
Thanks Jamie, I live on 12th st. & highland so Lopers is right around the corner! Sounds like this is exactly what I need! You don't have to give me an exact number but are we talking $1 to $100 or $100 to $200?

Re: Tuning BBC for AZ EMISSIONS?
The timing needs to be run down to the point that mostengines barely run. About 5*btdc the carb will need to be re tuned for this change. You can try with the filter on or off. Make sure the engine is HOT a 195 thermostat and get the engine to full temp run low octane to ensure a complete burn and once it's all over change everything back

Re: Tuning BBC for AZ EMISSIONS?
I haven't changed my spark plugs/wires/cap/rotor since 1990. I just give the ol' 454 a long run on the freeway prior to the smog test to get it up to normal operating temperature. Passes with flying colors every two years. I don't over think it.
