Axle code help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Can anyone tell me what axle code "TAY" is. It is a 1971 1/2ton 4x4. My book doesn't show that code for some reason?? I am trying to find out the gear ratio. Thanks, Joe

Hmmmm... You sure you have the letters right? All my Chevrolet parts Catolog shows for 71 K-10s are: THH=3:07, THJ=3:07 P/Trac., THK=3:73, THL=3:73 P/Trac. I checked from 69 to 72 and those numbers are even further away from what you have. It must be a later model rear end or something. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Wes, This is the 2nd or 3rd "71" I have had that the code wasn't in the book??? I have always found all of the other codes. And that is exactly what it says, TAY ????. I just sold a truck to BLAZERMAN and it has a 71 chassis with the same code ( I think)?

The book shows a THY (model) C-10 4.11:1, a TJY (model) C-10 3.54:1 Power Lock, TKY (model) 3988408 4.11:1 Thats all I have been able to come up with. You probly have the same book I have though. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

This won't be any help but the only entry Hollanders shows for TAY is a 1981 C10 4X2 10 bolt with 2.73 non-locking gears. I know this is not what you have. Wes already covered some of the other options. Sorry.
